Towards direct and eco-friendly analysis of plants using portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry: A methodological approach
Chemosphere. 2023 Jul 24:139613. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139613. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe assessment of the nutritional status of plants is traditionally performed by wet-digestion methods using oven-dried and ground samples. This process requires sampling, takes time, and it is non-environmentally friendly. Agricultural and environmental science have been greatly benefited by in-field, ecofriendly methods, and real-time element measurements. This work employed the portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (pXRF) to analyze intact and fresh leaves of crops aiming to assess the effect of water content and le...

Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Jul 4:125675. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.125675. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the present work, a novel Fe3O4-GLP@CAB was successfully synthesized via a co-precipitation procedure and applied for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous environment. The structural and physicochemical characteristics of the as-prepared materials were explored using a variety of characterization methods, including pHPZC, XRD, VSM, FE-SEM/EDX, BJH/BET, and FTIR. The effects of several experimental factors on the uptake of MB using Fe3O4-GLP@CAB were examined through batch experiments. The highest MB dye ...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 4866: Physicochemical Aspects, Bioactive Compounds, Phenolic Profile and In Vitro Antioxidant Activity of Tropical Red Fruits and Their Blend
The objective was to evaluate and compare the physicochemical characteristics, bioactive compounds, profile of phenolic compounds and in vitro antioxidant activity of pulps of three species of tropical red fruits (acerola, guava and pitanga) and of the blend produced from the combination. The pulps showed significant values of bioactive compounds, with emphasis on acerola, which had the highest levels in all parameters, except for lycopene, with the highest content in pitanga pulp. Nineteen phenolic compounds were identified, being phenolic acids, flavanols, anthocyanin and stilbene; of these, eighteen were quantified in a...

Development of the paper-based colorimetric sensor for simple and fast determination of quercetin in guava leaf extract
Anal Sci. 2023 Jun 7. doi: 10.1007/s44211-023-00380-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis present study aimed to develop a paper-based colorimetric sensor in the form of paper-microzone plates (PµZP), for simple and fast quercetin determination in guava leaf extract samples. Here, N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) solution was immobilized on the microzone as a sensing probe, where quercetin solution can be dropped on it to form red-purplish color adducts which can be seen by the naked eye or captured using a flatbed scanner. The color intensity of the microzone can be quantified against a blank solution and used as analytical data...

Inflammation inhibitory activity of green tea, soybean, and guava extracts during Sars-Cov-2 infection through TNF protein in cytokine storm
Comput Biol Chem. 2023 May 23;105:107898. doi: 10.1016/j.compbiolchem.2023.107898. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCoronavirus disease is caused by the pathogen severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) known as COVID-19. COVID-19 has caused the deaths of 6,541,936 people worldwide as of September 27th, 2022. SARS-CoV-2 severity is determined by a cytokine storm condition, in which the innate immune system creates an unregulated and excessive production of pro-inflammatory such IL-1, IL-6, NF Kappa B, and TNF alpha signaling molecules known as cytokines. The patient died due to respiratory organ failure an...

Graphene and gold nanoparticle-based bionanocomposite for the voltammetric determination of bisphenol A in (micro)plastics
Chemosphere. 2023 May 22:139016. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139016. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe monitoring of endocrine disruptors in the environment is one of the main strategies in the investigation of potential risks associated with exposure to these chemicals. Bisphenol A is one of the most prevalent endocrine-disrupting compounds and is prone to leaching out from polycarbonate plastic in both freshwater and marine environments. Additionally, microplastics also can leach out bisphenol A during their fragmentation in the water environment. In the quest for a highly sensitive sensor to determine bisphenol A in...

Mineral composition and production of guava under salt stress and salicylic acid
Braz J Biol. 2023 May 22;83:e272615. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.272615. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe limitation in the quality of water sources for irrigation in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil is increasingly present, so it is necessary to use water with high concentrations of salts for agricultural production, which makes the use of elicitors essential to mitigate the harmful effects of salinity on plants. Given the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of foliar application of salicylic acid on the mineral composition and production of guava plants under salt stress conditions in the pos...
