Opportunistic screening in the emergency department
Smoking cessation is currently topical with recent government announcements regarding restricting the sale of disposable vapes and a consultation on raising the legal age of buying tobacco from 18 years, so that anyone born after a certain year will never be able to buy cigarettes legally. This edition of the EMJ contains a randomised controlled multicentre trial of smoking cessation initiated in the emergency department (ED).1 The intervention group received brief smoking cessation advice as well as provision of an e-cigarette starter kit and referral to the local stop smoking services, while the control group received ad...

Undergraduate Biology Lecture Courses Predominantly Test Facts about Science Rather than Scientific Practices
CBE Life Sci Educ. 2024 Jun;23(2):ar19. doi: 10.1187/cbe.23-12-0244.ABSTRACTScientific practices are the skills used to develop scientific knowledge and are essential for careers in science. Despite calls from education and government agencies to cultivate scientific practices, there remains little evidence of how often students are asked to apply them in undergraduate courses. We analyzed exams from biology courses at 100 institutions across the United States and found that only 7% of exam questions addressed a scientific practice and that 32% of biology exams did not test any scientific practices. The low occurrence of s...

Reproductive and Social Policies, Sociopolitical Stress, and Implications for Maternal and Child Health Equity
AbstractPurpose of ReviewAlthough many environmental exposures (e.g., air pollution) are geographically patterned and persist as a result of historic economic policies (e.g., redlining), the impact of reproductive and social policies on maternal and child health remains incompletely understood. Reproductive and social policies are increasingly important for maternal and child health equity, particularly following the 2022 US Supreme Court decision inDobbs v Jackson Women ’s Health Organization ( “Dobbs decision”), which restricted access to abortion. Here, we summarize the literature from original research studies ex...

Community-Centred Environmental Discourse: Redefining Water Management in the Murray Darling Basin, Australia
AbstractThe Australian government's response to the Millennium Drought (1997 –2010) has been met with praise and contestation. While proponents saw the response as timely and crucial, critics claimed it was characterized by government overreach and mismanagement. Five months of field research in farm communities in the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) identified two dominant dis courses: administrative rationalism and a local community-based discourse I have termed community-centrism. Administrative rationalism reflects the value of scientific inquiry in service to the state and is the dominant research-based problem-solving m...

Prevalence of Soil-Transmitted Helminth Infections and Associated Risk Factors Among School Children in Dembecha Town, Ethiopia
This study aimed to determine the prevalence of STH infections and associated risk factors among three government elementary schools in Dembecha town, Ethiopia. We conducted a school-based cross-sectional study involving 316 participants between November 2019 and March 2020. A systematic random sampling method was used to select study participants from the study schools. Data related to the sociodemographic characteristics of the study participants and risk factors for STH infections were collected using a pretested questionnaire survey. Parasitological examinations of stool samples were performed using the formal-ether co...

Overview of U.S. COVID-19 vaccine safety surveillance systems
This report describes the U.S. government's COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring systems and programs used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Indian Health Service. Using the adverse event of myocarditis following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination as a model, we demonstrate how the multiple, complementary monitoring systems worked to rapidly detect, assess, and verify a vaccine safety signal. In addition, longer-term follow-up was conducted to evaluate the recovery status of myocarditis cases following vaccin...

A comprehensive examination of temporal-seasonal variations of PM < sub > 1.0 < /sub > and PM < sub > 2.5 < /sub > in taiwan before and during the COVID-19 lockdown
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33174-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCOVID-19 has been a significant global concern due to its contagious nature. In May 2021, Taiwan experienced a severe outbreak, leading the government to enforce strict Pandemic Alert Level 3 restrictions in order to curtail its spread. Although previous studies in Taiwan have examined the effects of these measures on air quality, further research is required to compare different time periods and assess the health implications of reducing particulate matter during the Level 3 lockdown. Herein, we analyzed the mass concen...
