Looking to gamble, newest U.S. health agency places first research bets
A year ago, when applied biologist Renee Wegrzyn took the helm of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), questions swirled around the brand-new agency, which was created by President Joe Biden to fund daring, cutting-edge biomedical research. Would the new organization be sufficiently different from the sluggish, risk-averse National Institutes of Health (NIH)? How would Wegrzyn, who had never run an agency, navigate pressures from Congress to shape the effort? And how quickly could she recruit the type of innovative scientific staff needed to identify out-of-the-box projects on which to spend a billion...

Composites made of Ginkgo biloba fibers and polylactic acid exhibit non-isothermal crystallization kinetics
In this study, alkali-treated Ginkgo biloba fibers (GFs) were melt blended with polylactic acid (PLA) to obtain GF/PLA blends. The non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of the GF/PLA composites were subsequently investigated using the Avrami, Jeziorny, Ozawa, and Liu-Mo methods, and the crystallization activation energies of the systems were calculated by Kissinger and Friedman models. The results showed that the GFs significantly promoted PLA crystallization, accelerated the crystallization rate, and shortened the crystallization time. The Avrami method showed some deviation from the linear relationship due to the effec...

< em > Hufsiella ginkgonis < /em > gen. nov., sp. nov. and < em > Hufsiella arboris < /em > sp. nov., isolated from tree barks
Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2023 Sep;73(9). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.006050.ABSTRACTTwo Gram-staining-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, bacteria that formed pale-pinkish colonies, designated HMF7056T and HMF7647T were isolated from Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) and Korean cornel dogwood (Cornus offcinalis), respectively. Phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of 16S rRNA genes and 92 core genes indicated that two strains represent novel species within the family Sphingobacteriaceae. HMF7056T and HMF7647T showed high 16S rRNA sequence similarities to Daejeonella lutea N7d-4T (93.9 % and 95.7 %, respectively). The genomes of HMF7056T and...

Preparation and functional characteristics of protein from Ginkgo endophytic Pseudomonas R6 and Ginkgo seed
In this study, Gingko endophytic protein (GEP) was synthesized by Ginkgo endophytic Pseudomonas R6. SDS-PAGE analysis indicated that the molecular weights of GSP and GEP were mainly distributed at 17 KDa and 48 KDa, respectively. FTIR showed that GEP and GSP exhibited characteristic absorption in the amide I, II, and III bands, and absorption in amide A and B indicated the presence of hydrogen bonding. HPLC analysis showed that both proteins had 17 amino acids, but their relative abundance was different, with GSP having the highest Ser content (74.713 mg/g) and GEP having the highest Val content (35.905 mg/g). Stomata were...

Disulfiram-Like Reaction With Ginaton: A Case Report and Literature Review
This article details such a case from China. Healthcare providers should be proactive in educating patients about the potential adverse reactions related to using Ginaton and the importance of avoiding alcohol consumption while using it. Patients should also be advised to disclose their alcohol-consumption habits and seek medical advice before initiating treatment with any medication or supplement during treatment with Ginaton.PMID:37722955 | DOI:10.1016/j.clinthera.2023.08.013 (Source: Clinical Therapeutics)
