How to handle software service agreements in radiology
Michael J. Cannavo. There are a number of important issues to be aware of when it comes to service of software-based systems like RIS, PACS, electronic medical record (EMR), and other related systems. And within these systems, there are items that need to be addressed separately such as system and modality interfaces, DICOM routers, and specialized turnkey hardware components such as vendor-neutral archives (VNA’s). Components like scanners or CD burners also may need repair or calibration from time to time. What you get from your service agreement depends on what you contract for. Most facilities just sign the standard ag...

Clinical trial finds cell therapy improves quality of life in advanced heart failure
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Stem cell-based therapy improved quality of life for patients with advanced heart failure, Mayo Clinic researchers and international collaborators discovered in a late-stage multinational clinical trial. In one of the largest studies of cell intervention after a heart attack, patients reported t heir daily hardship lessened when stem cells optimized for heart repair supplemented standard of care. This clinical study further documented lower death and hospitalization rates among those treated with cell therapy.… (Source: News from Mayo Clinic)

Could the ‘central dogma’ of biology be misleading bioengineers?
Key takeawaysMesenchymal stem cells, found in bone marrow, secrete therapeutic proteins that could potentially help regenerate damaged tissue.A UCLA study examining these cells challenges the conventional understanding of which genetic instructions prompt the release of these therapeutic proteins. The  findings could help advance both regenerative medicine research and the laboratory production of biologic treatments already in use.Today, medicines based on antibodies— proteins that fight infection and disease —are prescribed for everything from cancer to COVID-19 to high cholesterol. The antibody drugs are supplied by ...

Can stem cell injections treat knee osteoarthritis?
In this study, the group hypothesized that injecting these cells into knee joints could serve as an intervention to treat patients. In a preliminary trial, the group treated 30 patients (27 women and three men, mean age 61 years old) with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis. In each patient, clinicians injected a solution of stem cells (70 million allogeneic cells) into the genicular arteries, a network that supplies blood to structures around the knee. All of the patients were admitted for one day following the procedure. MRIs of patients’ knees were acquired prior to the procedure and at one, six, and nine months ...

Why Repairing Your EV Is So Expensive
Electric-vehicle owners are finding a surprising downside to their new wheels: They tend to be expensive to repair after a crash. When Scott MacFiggen ’s neighbor backed into his Rivian R1T pickup truck last summer, the vehicle was left with a dent the size of a bowling ball under a rear taillamp.#scottmacfiggens #rivian (Source: Reuters: Health)

Ancient redwoods recover from fire by sprouting 1000-year-old buds
When lightning ignited fires around California’s Big Basin Redwoods State Park north of Santa Cruz in August 2020, the blaze spread quickly. Redwoods naturally resist burning, but this time flames shot through the canopies of 100-meter-tall trees, incinerating the needles. “It was shocking,” says Drew Peltier, a tree ecophysiologist at Northern Arizona University. “It really seemed like most of the trees were going to die.” Yet many of them lived. In a paper published yesterday in Nature Plants , Peltier and his colleagues help explain why: The charred survivors, despite being defoliated, mobilize...

Tiny ‘anthrobots’ built from human cells could help heal the body
In the medicine of the future, molecular physicians built from a patient’s own cells might ferret out cancer, repair injured tissue, and even remove plaque from blood vessels. Researchers have now taken a step toward that vision: They’ve coaxed tracheal cells to form coordinated groups called organoids that can propel themselves with tiny appendages. When added to wounded neurons in the lab, these “anthrobots” helped neurons repair themselves . The work, reported today in Advanced Science , “is amazing, and groundbreaking,” says Xi “Charlie” Ren, a tissue engineer at Carnegie Mello...
