Laparoscopic repair of duodenal atresia: systematic review and meta-analysis after consistent implementation of the technique in the past decade
ConclusionsLRDA showed equivalent complication rates compared to OR with an additional benefit of quicker establishment of feeds. There was no significant difference in complication and conversion rates between laparoscopic techniques. Despite a longer operative time, LRDA provides a safe minimal access approach for neonates after this consistent implementation of the technique in the past decade. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1944: A Rapid Self-Assembling Peptide Hydrogel for Delivery of TFF3 to Promote Gastric Mucosal Injury Repair
Zhao Luo Self-assembled peptide-based nanobiomaterials exhibit promising prospects for drug delivery applications owing to their commendable biocompatibility and biodegradability, facile tissue uptake and utilization, and minimal or negligible unexpected toxicity. TFF3 is an active peptide autonomously secreted by gastric mucosal cells, possessing multiple biological functions. It acts on the surface of the gastric mucosa, facilitating the repair process of gastric mucosal damage. However, when used as a drug, TFF3 faces significant challenges, including short retention time in the gastric mucosal cavity and deacti...

Characterization of structural, genotoxic, and immunological effects of methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) induced DNA modifications: Implications for inflammation-driven carcinogenesis
This study focuses on an in-depth understanding of the structural instability, induced antigenicity on the DNA molecule, cross-reactive anti-DNA antibodies, and cytotoxic potential of MMS in peripheral lymphocytes and cancer cell lines. The findings are decisive in identifying the hazardous nature of MMS to alter the intricacies of DNA and morphology of the cell. Structural alterations were assessed through UV-Vis, fluorescence, liquid chromatography, and mass spectroscopy (LCMS). The thermal instability of DNA was analyzed using duplex melting temperature profiles. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed gr...

Calcium signaling induces partial EMT and renal fibrosis in a Wnt4 < sup > mCherry < /sup > knock-in mouse model
Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis. 2024 Apr 21:167180. doi: 10.1016/j.bbadis.2024.167180. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe renal tubular epithelial cells (TEC) have a strong capacity for repair after acute injury, but when this mechanism becomes uncontrollable, it leads to chronic kidney diseases (CKD). Indeed, in progress toward CKDs, the TECs may dedifferentiate, undergo epithelial-to-mesenchyme transition (EMT), and promote inflammation and fibrosis. Given the critical role of Wnt4 signaling in kidney ontogenesis, we addressed whether changes in this signaling are connected to renal inflammation and fibrosis by taking...

Silicone Oil Tamponade for Therapy of Primary Retinal Detachment in Patients Who Live at High Altitudes
CONCLUSION: PPV with SO injection seems to be a safe and efficient surgical approach in the treatment of primary uncomplicated RRD in patients living at high altitudes and was associated with good anatomical and functional outcome in our series. However, the need for a follow-up surgery to remove SO should be weighed in these cases.PMID:38653297 | DOI:10.1055/a-2233-0971 (Source: Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde)

Correction of Congenital Syndactyly of the Hand with Minimal Full-Thickness Skin Graft from the Weight-Bearing Midline Plantar Area
CONCLUSION: Correction of congenital hand syndactyly using midline plantar FTSG from the weight-bearing area can reduce scarring on the hand dorsum, ensure superior color similarity with surrounding skin, and offer inconspicuous donor sites compared to no-skin-graft or groin FTSG techniques.PMID:38652871 | DOI:10.1097/PRS.0000000000011484 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Molecular mechanism of high glucose-induced mitochondrial DNA damage in retinal ganglion cells
Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand). 2024 Mar 31;70(3):219-224. doi: 10.14715/cmb/2024.70.3.33.ABSTRACTMitochondrial DNA damage in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) may be closely related to lesions of glaucoma. RGCs were cultured with different concentrations of glucose and grouped into 3 groups, namely normal control (NC) group, Low-Glu group, and High-Glu group. Cell viability was measured with cell counting kit-8, and cell apoptosis was measured using flow cytometry. The DNA damage was measured with comet assay, and the morphological changes of damaged mitochondria in RGCs were observed using TEM. Western blot analyzed the expr...

Pneumothorax during shoulder surgery
Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen. 2024 Apr 4;144(5). doi: 10.4045/tidsskr.23.0542. Print 2024 Apr 23.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Pneumothorax following shoulder arthroscopy, although rare, is documented in over 30 PubMed case reports as occurring during or within 10 hours post-procedure.CASE PRESENTATION: A fit septuagenarian underwent a two-hour arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with IV anaesthesia and laryngeal mask airway, without a nerve block. With one hour remaining of the operation, the patient had desaturation and hypotension. Lung sliding was absent on ultrasound and x-ray confirmed left-sided tension pneumothorax. Successful thorac...

DNA damage, obesity and obesity-related health complications: what are new data telling us?
This article surveys new data that support these contentions.RECENT FINDINGS: Whole exome sequencing analyses have identified rare variants linked to high BMI and adiposity. Two of the identified genes are linked to DNA damage and DNA repair, suggesting that DNA damage itself may play a role in the cause of obesity. It has also been recognized that obesity increases DNA damage in breast tissue of carriers of BRCA mutations and rates of tumour formation in BRCA1+ mice, indicating effect of obesity on cancer development in high-risk populations. In addition, obesity promotes cancer cell chemoresistance by decreasing fatty ac...
