Insect-scaled aerial robot
During flights, insect-scaled aerial robots like this one suffer damage to their actuators, or artificial muscles, that power their wings. Inspired by the hardiness of bumblebee wings, researchers have developed repair techniques that can enable these aerial microbots to effectively recover flight ...This is an NSF Multimedia Gallery item. NIH Director's Seminar Series: Exploring the functions of skin as an immunological interface
The skin is a vital barrier against environmental stressors such as thermal changes, sunlight, allergens, toxins, and microbes. An array of cell types including epithelia, fibroblasts, neurons, and vasculature act together to ensure its function. Immune cells have emerged as orchestrators of skin biology that collectively serve to reinforce the barrier against external threats. The composition and function of immune cells are constantly tuned by skin structures, microbial and inflammatory stimuli. In turn, skin immune cells engage in an active dialogue with the tissue to regulate the microbiota, limit microbial invasion an...

IIG Seminar - Multimodal decoding of liver regeneration and repair
Neil Henderson, Professor of Tissue Repair and Regeneration at the University of Edinburgh, is an academic hepatologist with an international profile in defining cellular interactions and molecular pathways driving organ fibrosis. Organ fibrosis (scarring) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and as yet there are no effective anti-fibrotic treatments. Dr. Henderson is primarily interested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive organ fibrosis, and the pathways which are responsible for efficient wound healing and healthy tissue regeneration following injury. Dr. Henderson and his group have de...
