TyG index is positively associated with HOMA-IR in cholelithiasis patients with insulin resistance: Based on a retrospective observational study
CONCLUSION: Our study indicated that TyG index is positively correlated with HOMA-IR. TyG index was found as a risk factor for insulin resistance.PMID:38508891 | DOI:10.1016/j.asjsur.2024.03.004 (Source: Asian Journal of Surgery)

Spasmolytic Effect of Flopropione Does Not Involve Catechol-O- methyltransferase (COMT) Inhibition
Biol Pharm Bull. 2024;47(3):660-668. doi: 10.1248/bpb.b23-00808.ABSTRACTFlopropione (Flo) has been used for gallstone and urolithiasis as a spasmolytic agent almost exclusively in Japan. According to the package insert, its main mechanism is catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibition and anti-serotonergic effect. This is obviously contrary to pharmacological common sense, but it is described that way in pharmacology textbooks and occurs in questions in the National Examination for Pharmacists in Japan. As this is a serious problem in education, we re-examined the action of Flo. The guinea pig ureter was hardly contract...

Association between dietary magnesium intake and gallstones: the mediating role of atherogenic index of plasma
Dyslipidemia and abnormalities in cholesterol metabolism are commonly observed in individuals with gallstone disease. Previous research has demonstrated that dietary magnesium can influence lipid metabolism. T... (Source: Lipids in Health and Disease)

Prognostic Insights and Survival Analysis of Gallbladder Cancer in Bihar, India: a Prospective Observational Study Emphasizing the Impact of Surgical Intervention on Overall Survival
AbstractThe aim of this study was to determine the 1- and 3-year overall survival rates. This prospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Bihar state, India. The study analyzed 228 patients in Bihar with a median age at diagnosis of 55  ± 12.05 years. The most common symptoms included upper abdominal pain (26.3%), weight loss (14%), and ascites (13.6%). The majority of patients presented at stage IV (72.8%), with liver metastasis being prevalent (61.4%). Interventional biliary drainage was performed in 9.6% of cases, and sys temic chemotherapy was received by 84.64%, while 15.36% opted ...

Intestinal microbiota and biliary system diseases
DiscussionThe existing research mostly focuses on exploring the mechanisms of bacteria targeting a single disease. Lacking comparison of multiple diseases and changes in bacteria during the disease process. We hope to provide biomarkers forearly diagnosis of biliary system diseases and provide new directions for the mechanism of intestinal microbiota in biliary diseases. Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 455: Acalculous Cholecystitis in COVID-19 Patients: A Narrative Review
stos Savopoulos Acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) represents cholecystitis without gallstones, occurring in approximately 5–10% of all cases of acute cholecystitis in adults. Several risk factors have been recognized, while infectious diseases can be a cause of cholecystitis in otherwise healthy people. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and has spread worldwide, leading to an unprecedented pandemic. The virus enters cells through the binding of the spike protein to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors expressed ...

Independent association of general and central adiposity with risk of gallstone disease: observational and genetic analyses
ConclusionBoth observational and genetic analyses consistently provide evidence on an association of central obesity with an increased risk of GSD, independent of general obesity. Our work highlights the need of considering both general and central obesity in the clinical management of GSD. (Source: Frontiers in Endocrinology)

Gallbladder microbial species and host bile acids biosynthesis linked to cholesterol gallstone comparing to pigment individuals
Gallstones are crystalline deposits in the gallbladder that are traditionally classified as cholesterol, pigment, or mixed stones based on their composition. Microbiota and host metabolism variances among the different types of gallstones remain largely unclear. Here, the bile and gallstone microbial species spectra of 29 subjects with gallstone disease (GSD, 24 cholesterol and 5 pigment) were revealed by type IIB restriction site-associated DNA microbiome sequencing (2bRAD-M). Among them (21 subjects: 18 cholesterol and 3 pigment), plasma samples were subjected to liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) untarget...

Comparison of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in children at paediatric centres and adult centres: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The number of LCs performed, intraoperative cholangiography use and conversion rates were higher at ACs whereas bile duct injury and reoperation rates were higher at PCs. Despite a higher incidence of bile duct injury at PCs, the incidence at both PCs and ACs was <1%. In complex cases, a joint operation by both paediatric and adult surgeons might be a better approach to further improve outcomes. Overall, LC was found to be a safe operation with comparable outcomes at PCs and ACs.PMID:38445605 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2023.0041 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)
