Self-management skills we don ’ t often discuss
I’m back from my summer break (I’m in Aotearoa/New Zealand – we shut down over Christmas/New Year just like the US and UK do over July/August!), and I want to begin with a cracker of a topic: medication management! Now I am not a prescriber. I don’t hold any ability to write prescriptions of any kind, not even exercise ;-). Yet most of the people I’ve seen in clinical practice have started their journey living with pain by being prescribed medications. All medications have side effects, true effects (well… maybe), adverse effects, and the human factor: taking them in the way that o...

In conclusion, FMD cycles have high potential to be effective in increasing the toxicity of a range of therapies against ALL and other blood cancers and should be tested in randomized clinical trials, especially in combination with immunotherapy and low toxicity cancer therapies. In summary, we present a new strategy for improving leukemia treatment by combining FMD with chemotherapy to promote the killing of ALL cells in part by an immune-dependent mechanism. Fasting/FMD has been shown to reduce chemotherapy-associated toxicity in pre-clinical and clinical studies and thus represents a safe and potentially effectiv...

Using our Journal Evaluation Tool to determine credibility of a journal
It’s been about seven years since we developed a tool (a downloadable rubric and explainer) to help our faculty determine the credibility of a journal. You can download the tool at https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/librarian_pubs/40/ and read about the development of it at https://jlsc-pub.org/articles/abstract/10.7710/2162-3309.2250/. People have told us – often! – how they use the tool in their personal decision-making about where to publish, as well as sharing the tool in their classrooms and with friends. When we developed the tool, I hoped the set of decision criteria in it would be used to further the broader disc...

Healthcare Generative AI and Data – 2024 Health IT Predictions
The objective is not to supplant human roles but to harness AI’s additional value to aid staff, patients, and their families. Properly executed, AI and automation can cut down non-clinical workloads, freeing up professionals to focus on direct patient care. The industry’s aim for 2024 should be this collaborative approach and ensuring data safety as we advance this remarkable technology. Healthcare organizations aim to strengthen communication channels. Integrating RTLS visibility with patient workflow software allows automated text updates for patient-approved contacts, enhancing trust, clarity, and safety. RT...

Natural Killer Cell Numbers Increase with Age
The immune system ages in ways that are harmful to tissue function and health, becoming both less effective and overly inflammatory. Not all of the observed changes in immune cell activities and immune cell population sizes are harmful, however. Some are compensatory, even though this compensation isn't enough to stop the overall decline. With that in mind, researchers here report on an analysis of the size of immune cell populations in old individuals, including centenarians. They find that natural killer cells increase in number with age, which they characterize as an adaptation to the aged environment. The imm...

Chronological Age is Not a Good Component of Patient Risk Assessment
Chronological age is embedded in a great many standardized, widely-used protocols for patient risk assessment. Age-related diseases are, after all, age-related, and this use of chronological age has long seemed a reasonable choice. That said, we are now moving into an era in which novel means of measuring biological age are under development, such as epigenetic clocks. Biological age is the burden of damage and dysfunction resulting from the causative processes of aging. Obviously, this should better reflect the odds of suffering age-related disease. While biological age correlates with chronological age, there is a...

Pharmacy Interoperability and Pharmacy Perspectives Coming Out of the ONC Annual Meeting
It never ceases to amaze me how integral the role of the pharmacist could be to a patient and how many pharmacists are relegated to counting pills and checking insurance.  I first experienced this in my first healthcare job which included handling IT support for the pharmacy.  Yes, the pharmacist has to make sure the prescription is filled properly and the patient gets the right number of pills.  However, I quickly learned that pharmacists can be some of the best sources of medical information for me as a patient.  Not to mention, they generally more accessible to talk about the medication and how it works than the doc...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, January 8th 2024
This study examined whether the local injection of the supernatant of activated PRP (saPRP) into the salivary gland (SG) could help prevent aging-induced SG dysfunction and explored the mechanisms responsible for the protective effects on the SG hypofunction. Human salivary gland epithelial cells (hSGEC) were treated with saPRP or PRP after senescence through irradiation. The significant proliferation of hSGEC was observed in saPRP treated group compared to irradiation only group and irradiation + PRP group. Cellular senescence, apoptosis, and inflammation were significantly reduced in the saPRP group. Th...
