Persistent hypernatremia secondary to adipsic central diabetes insipidus in a patient with herpes-induced meningoencephalitis and COVID-19 infection: a case report
J Int Med Res. 2024 Mar;52(3):3000605241235747. doi: 10.1177/03000605241235747.ABSTRACTCentral diabetes insipidus (CDI) typically manifests as a polyuria-polydipsia syndrome, in which normonatremia is generally maintained through the polydipsia. A 53-year-old woman presented with diabetic ketosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic syndrome. Her medical history included herpes meningoencephalitis, which was associated with confusion and amnesia. On physical examination, she was apyretic, confused, and had signs of extracellular dehydration. Her capillary glucose concentration was high and her urine was positive for ketones. Lab...

Enuresis in young offenders – a study on prevalence and mental health comorbidity
ConclusionProblems with enuresis are common among delinquent youth and may be associated with increased mental health problems. Given the potentially increased risk for suicidal thoughts and behavior in young offenders with enuresis, comprehensive mental health screening of those who are detected with this condition should be considered in the juvenile justice system. Comparison of comfort and tear stability with two novel silicone-hydrogel daily disposable contact lenses
ConclusionThe results of this study showed a consistent surface-wetting advantage of verofilcon A in patients with ocular discomfort. verofilcon A was used comfortably in patients with low NIBUT scores at baseline. The findings suggest that verofilcon A is recommended for SCL wearers experiencing SCL-related dry eye symptoms and discomfort. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

A Wetting and Capture Strategy Overcoming Electrostatic Repulsion for Electroreduction of Nitrate to Ammonia from Low ‐Concentration Sewage
A wetting and capture strategy is proposed to overcome the intrinsic electrostatic repulsion between cathode and NO3− anions. And nanoisland-like Cu@CuCoO2 as the active phase of Cu ─Co cathode can sense low-concentration NO3− with high sensitivity and reduce NO3− to ammonia via energy-efficient atomic hydrogen pathway. AbstractAmmonia production by electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) in water streams is anticipated as a zero-carbon route. Limited by dilute nitrate in natural sewage and the electrostatic repulsion between NO3− and cathode, NO3RR can hardly be achieved energy-efficiently. The hydro...

Development of lactic acid based chain extender and soybean oil-derived polyurethanes for ecofriendly sustained drug delivery systems
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Mar 11:130717. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.130717. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the present study, a range of sustainable, biocompatible and biodegradable polyurethanes (PU-1 to PU-4) were synthesized using different combinations of biobased polyol (obtained through the epoxidation of soybean oil, followed by ring opening with ethanol) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) and isophorone diisocyanate. The sustainable chain extender used in this study was synthesized by the esterification of lactic acid with ethylene glycol (EG). The synthesized PU samples were characterized through scanning electron ...

Discontinuing absorbent pants in children with bedwetting: a randomized controlled trial
Conclusion:  A ~ 10% complete resolution rate was associated with discontinuing APP. While statistically significant, the clinical relevance is debatable, and the intervention should be tried only if the family is motivated. Response was detectable within 2 weeks. Discontinuing APP for 4–8 weeks was re ported to negatively affect QoL and sleep quality. No severe side effects were seen.Trial registration:Clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT04620356; date registered: September 23, 2020. National Survey on bladder and bowel dysfunctions in Autism Spectrum Disorder population
ConclusionThis survey demonstrated that LUTS are very common in the young ASD population and that the prevalence of urinary symptoms is related to higher severity of the ASD condition. Bowel disorders are often associated with urinary symptoms and dysfunctions. Urologists should be aware of the frequent occurrence of urological disorders and symptoms in individuals with ASD and should be involved in their clinical management in a multidisciplinary team that cares for these people. Understanding the petal effect: Wetting properties and surface structure of natural rose petals and rose petal-derived surfaces
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Mar 4;236:113832. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113832. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe petal effect is identified as a non-wetting state with high drop adhesion. The wetting behavior of petal surfaces is attributed to the papillose structure of their epidermis, which leads to a Cassie-Baxter regime combined with strong pinning sites. Under this scenario, sessile drops are pearl shaped and, unlike lotus-like surfaces, firmly attached to the surface. Petal surfaces are used as inspiration for the fabrication of functional parahydrophobic surfaces such as antibacterial or water-harvesting...

Application of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose to improve the wettability of chitosan coating and its preservation performance on tangerine fruits
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Mar 1:130539. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.130539. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) was employed as an intermediate layer to enhance interfacial interaction between chitosan (CS) coating and tangerine fruits, thereby improving the preservation effect. Owing to the low surface tension of tangerine fruit (26.04 mN/m), CS coating solutions showed poor wetting properties on fruit peels (contact angle > 100°). However, by applying a 1.0 % (w/v) HPMC coating on fruits, the contact angle of CS solutions with concentrations of 0.5 %, 1.0 %, and 1.5 % (w/v) decreased t...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1112: Study on the Effects of Wettability and Pressure in Shale Matrix Nanopore Imbibition during Shut-in Process by Molecular Dynamics Simulations
g Yuhao Mei Shut-in after fracturing is generally adopted for wells in shale oil reservoirs, and imbibition occurring in matrix nanopores has been proven as an effective way to improve recovery. In this research, a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was used to investigate the effects of wettability and pressure on nanopore imbibition during shut-in for a typical shale reservoir, Jimsar. The results indicate that the microscopic advancement mechanism of the imbibition front is the competitive adsorption between “interfacial water molecules” at the imbibition front and “adsorb...
