Quality assurance of add-on testing in plasma samples: stability limit for 29 biochemical analytes
CONCLUSIONS: A reduced stability of primary plasma samples was observed for five common biochemical analytes ordered in an emergency context. To ensure the quality of add-on testing for these samples, plasma aliquots provide stability for a longer period.PMID:38665870 | PMC:PMC11042558 | DOI:10.11613/BM.2024.020704 (Source: Biochemia Medica)

Comparison of lipemia interference created with native lipemic material and intravenous lipid emulsion in emergency laboratory tests
CONCLUSIONS: Significant differences were scrutinized in interference patterns of lipemia types, emphasizing the need for careful consideration of lipemia interferences in clinical laboratories. It is crucial to note that lipid emulsions inadequately replicate lipemic samples.PMID:38665874 | PMC:PMC11042557 | DOI:10.11613/BM.2024.020701 (Source: Biochemia Medica)

Effect of Reliable Recovery on Health Care Costs and Productivity Losses in Emotional Disorders
Behav Ther. 2024 May;55(3):585-594. doi: 10.1016/j.beth.2023.08.012. Epub 2023 Sep 10.ABSTRACTDespite the high economic costs associated with emotional disorders, relatively few studies have examined the variation in costs according to whether the patient has achieved a reliable recovery. The aim of this study was to explore differences in health care costs and productivity losses between primary care patients from a previous randomized controlled trial (RCT)-PsicAP-with emotional symptoms who achieved a reliable recovery and those who did not after transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral therapy (TD-CBT) plus treatment as us...

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Tapping for Pediatric Emergency Department Staff During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evaluation of a Pilot Intervention
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the limitations of a single-arm study design, a 10-minute brief EFT tapping session was a promising way to reduce short-term psychologic distress in pediatric ED health care workers. Future studies, including rigorous randomized controlled trials, are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of brief EFT tapping interventions in other settings.PMID:38665925 | PMC:PMC11040184 | DOI:10.1089/acu.2023.0099 (Source: Acupuncture in Medicine)

Role of the systemic immune-inflammation index in predicting spontaneous stone passage in patients with renal colic
CONCLUSION: Our findings showed that a low SII level was associated with SSP and could be used as a predictive marker of SSP as a more valuable parameter than NLR. SII and NLR, together with other indicators, are inflammatory markers that can be used in the clinical decision-making process for ureteral stone treatment.PMID:38669143 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2024.2347198 (Source: Postgraduate Medicine)

IJCH - COVID-19 in the Arctic: special issue
Int J Circumpolar Health. 2024 Dec;83(1):2341990. doi: 10.1080/22423982.2024.2341990. Epub 2024 Apr 26.ABSTRACTThe Circumpolar region, comprising the Arctic territories encircling the North Pole, is home to diverse Indigenous cultures facing unique socio-economic challenges. Indigenous communities such as the Inuit, Sámi, Athabaskan, Gwitchin, and Russian Arctic groups exhibit rich traditions and adaptive practices tied to their environments. Environmental diversity, from icy tundra to boreal forests, influences livelihoods and biodiversity, while significant socio-economic disparities persist, impacting access to healthc...

Injury risk curves to guide safe speed limits on Swedish roads using German crash data supplemented with estimated non-injury crashes
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 Apr 25;202:107586. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2024.107586. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVision Zero postulates that no one should be killed or seriously injured in road traffic; therefore, it is necessary to define evidence-based speed limits to mitigate impact severity. The overall aims to guide the definition of safe speeds limits by establishing relations between impact speed and the risk of at-least-moderate (MAIS2+) and at-least-severe (MAIS3+) injuries for car occupants in frontal and side crashes in Sweden. As Swedish in-depth data are unavailable, the first objective was to assess the applicability o...

Volunteering intentions during social crises: The role of considering the welfare of others and consequences of own behavior
Acta Psychol (Amst). 2024 Apr 25;246:104289. doi: 10.1016/j.actpsy.2024.104289. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the current paper, we investigate how people with experience with volunteering in their lifetime intend to engage in hypothetical crisis volunteering in the future. We took into account two types of hypothetical social crises: a pandemic and a refugee crisis. We suggest that individual differences in considering the welfare of others (social value orientation) and consideration of future/immediate consequences play a role in the volunteer responses to crises. We also control for the willingness to volunteer in t...

McArdle's disease revealed by acute low back pain
We report the case of a 17-year-old male patient who was referred to the emergency department for the management of acute inflammatory low back pain, without traumatic context, associated with an increase of CK at 66,336 UI/L (N<192UI/L) and a CRP at 202mg/L. The immunological assessment was negative and the spinal MRI showed images in favor of necrotizing fasciitis affecting the erector spinae muscles, among others. Faced with the description of difficulties in practicing physical activities since childhood and a non-ischaemic forearm exercise test showing no elevation in lactacidemia, genetic tests were carried out, f...

Medical Malpractice Cases Involving Medical Students
CONCLUSIONS: Medical malpractice claims involving medical students are rare but commonly relate to medical decision-making, procedural complication, and poor communication, with a lack of supervision being frequently cited. These results can be used to guide students and supervising physicians on how to avoid scenarios that may increase vulnerability to medical malpractice lawsuits.PMID:38669133 | DOI:10.1097/ACM.0000000000005746 (Source: Pain Physician)
