Use of Reverse Shock Index Multiplied by Simplified Motor Score in a Five-Level Triage System: Identifying Trauma in Adult Patients at a High Risk of Mortality
Conclusions: The combination of rSI-sMS and the TTAS yielded superior prioritization performance to TTAS alone. The integration of rSI-sMS and TTAS effectively enhances the efficiency and accuracy of identifying trauma patients at a high risk of mortality.PMID:38674293 | PMC:PMC11052466 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040647 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

A review on side effect management of second generation antipsychotics to treat schizophrenia: a drug safety perspective
Expert Opin Drug Saf. 2024 Apr 27. doi: 10.1080/14740338.2024.2348561. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Effective side effects management present a challenge in antipsychotic treatment with second generation antipsychotics (SGAs). In recent years, most of the commonly used SGAs, except for clozapine, have been shown to differ only slightly in their effectiveness, but considerably regarding perceived side effects, safety profiles, and compatibility to preexisting medical conditions.AREAS COVERED: The current state of available evidence on side effect management in SGA treatment of patients with schizophrenia spec...

Opening the black box of registration practice for self-harm and suicide attempts in emergency departments: a qualitative study
CONCLUSION: The study findings resulted in eight overall recommendations for clinical practice that aim at improving the registration of patients presenting with self-harm or suicide attempts. This would be expected to help improve surveillance and prevention programs.PMID:38678191 | PMC:PMC11055235 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-024-02393-6 (Source: Primary Care)

Surgical Emergencies in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Surg Clin North Am. 2024 Jun;104(3):685-699. doi: 10.1016/j.suc.2023.11.012. Epub 2023 Dec 14.ABSTRACTInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients are at risk for undergoing emergency surgery for fulminant disease, toxic megacolon, bowel perforation, intestinal obstruction, or uncontrolled gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Unfortunately, medical advancements have failed to significantly decrease rates of emergency surgery for IBD. It is therefore important for all acute care and colorectal surgeons to understand the unique considerations owed to this often-challenging patient population.PMID:38677830 | DOI:10.1016/j.suc.2023.11.01...

Colorectal Oncologic Emergencies: Recognition, Management, and Outcomes
Surg Clin North Am. 2024 Jun;104(3):631-646. doi: 10.1016/j.suc.2023.12.003. Epub 2023 Dec 18.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer is the third most frequent type of malignancy in the United States, and the age at diagnosis is decreasing. Although the goal of screening is focused on prevention and early detection, a subset of patients inevitably presents as oncologic emergencies. Approximately 15% of patients with colorectal cancer will present as surgical emergencies, with the majority being due to either colonic perforation or obstruction. Patients presenting with colorectal emergencies are a challenging cohort, as they often prese...

Investigation of the Association between Bilateral Selective Anterograde Cerebral Perfusion and Postoperative Ischemic Stroke in Obese Patients with Emergency Surgery for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection
Conclusions: A patient-tailored strategy for cerebral perfusion should be considered in obese patients, considering the high atheromatous burden of the supra-aortic vessels in these patients and the potential risk of atheromatous embolization associated with this technique.PMID:38674307 | PMC:PMC11052173 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040661 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Design and implementation of community consultation for research conducted under exception from informed consent regulations for the PreVent and the PreVent 2 trials: Changes over time and during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSION: The PreVent experience illustrated operational advantages and disadvantages to community consultation conducted primarily by telephone, in-person events, or online activities. Approaches to enhance community acceptance included partnering with community leaders to optimize the communication strategies and trust building with the involvement of Institutional Review Board representatives during community meetings. Researchers might need to pivot from in-person planning to virtual techniques while maintaining the ability to engage with the public with two-way communication approaches. Due to less active engagement...
