Clinical features and prognosis of ANCA-associated vasculitis patients who were double-seropositive for myeloperoxidase-ANCA and proteinase 3-ANCA
AbstractAnti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) –associated vasculitis (AAV) patients with dual positivity for proteinase 3-ANCA (PR3-ANCA) and myeloperoxidase-ANCA (MPO-ANCA) are uncommon. We aimed to investigate these idiopathic double-positive AAV patients’ clinical features, histological characteristics, and prognosis. We reviewed all the electronic medical records of patients diagnosed with AAV to obtain clinical data and renal histological information from January 2010 to December 2020 in a large center in China. Patients were assigned to the MPO-AAV group or PR3-AAV group or idiopathic double-positive AAV gr...

An Evaluation of the Clinical Tools Used to Monitor Illicit Methamphetamine Use Among Chronic Pain Patients: A Cross Sectional Retrospective Study
Discussion: Confirmatory testing with mass spectrometry can detect illicit drugs, such as methamphetamine, with high sensitivity and specificity and should be used with all samples given the low sensitivity of screening immunoassay. It is of utmost importance that opioid pain medicine prescribers know the many possible interpretations of these results so that they are equipped to make appropriate clinical decisions to ensure the safety of the patient, prescriber, and practice.PMID:38560537 | PMC:PMC10977063 | DOI:10.1177/00185787231174752 (Source: Pain Physician)

Impact of cytomegalovirus on outcomes in acute severe ulcerative colitis: a retrospective observational study
CONCLUSION: CMV positivity was associated with worse outcomes of need for rescue therapy, hospital stay and readmissions. Antiviral therapy was not found to reduce the risk of colectomy but did extend the time to colectomy. Further prospective studies will be required to more clearly determine its benefit in patients with concomitant CMV and ASUC.PMID:38560721 | PMC:PMC10981253 | DOI:10.1177/20406223241233203 (Source: Adv Data)

Artificial Intelligence in Hand Surgery - How Generative AI is Transforming the Hand Surgery Landscape
In conclusion, generative AI is poised to enhance patient care and ease physician workloads, starting with automating administrative tasks and evolving to inform diagnoses, tailored treatment plans, as well as aid in surgical planning. As healthcare systems navigate the complexities of integrating AI, the potential benefits for both physicians and patients remain significant, offering a glimpse into a future where AI transforms healthcare delivery. Level of Evidence: Level V (Diagnostic).PMID:38553849 | DOI:10.1142/S2424835524300019 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Extended pelvic lymph node dissection in robot-assisted radical prostatectomy is an independent risk factor for major complications
AbstractThe aim of this study is to evaluate the major postoperative complication rate after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) and to identify related risk factors.  A consecutive series of patients who underwent RARP between September 2016 and May 2021, with or without extended pelvic lymph node dissection (ePLND) were analyzed for postoperative complications that occurred within 30 days following surgery. Potential risk factors related to complications were identified by means of a multivariate logistic analysis. Electronic medical records were retrospectively reviewed for the occurrence of major complications...

Practice patterns in reporting and documentation of Charles Bonnet syndrome: a retrospective review following COVID-19
CONCLUSION: Practice patterns and patient characteristics were similar between the two intervals; however, subtle differences suggest a growing awareness of CBS. Targeted interventions in high-burden clinical subspecialties may encourage reporting and improve documentation of CBS.PMID:38550759 | PMC:PMC10976482 | DOI:10.1177/25158414241232285 (Source: Adv Data)

Association between serum ferritin level and lipid profile among diabetic patients: A retrospective cohort study
This study aimed to investigate the association between SF and dyslipidemia in adults diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. This cross-sectional study retrospectively analyzed the electronic medical records of eligible patients from 3 primary locations in Saudi Arabia namely - Abha, Khamis Mushyt, and Jeddah - from 2010 to 2020. The study included adult patients aged 18 years or older who were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and identified with an HbA1c level of ≥6.5. This study involved 3674 participants, with males accounting for 26.6% of the total. The mean age of the studied population was 48.0 ± 18.4 years. The median...

Retrospective study of the impact of diabetes on the severity and prognosis of COVID ‑19
Exp Ther Med. 2024 Mar 11;27(5):194. doi: 10.3892/etm.2024.12482. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTPatients with diabetes coexisting with viral infection tend to have poor outcomes, but the association between diabetes and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) prognosis is controversial at present. The present study reviewed and analyzed the data of 1,892 patients with COVID-19 admitted to Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital (Xi'an, China). Demographic, clinical, laboratory and treatment data as well as clinical outcomes were extracted from the electronic medical records and compared between patients with and without diabetes. ...
