Practice patterns in reporting and documentation of Charles Bonnet syndrome: a retrospective review following COVID-19
CONCLUSION: Practice patterns and patient characteristics were similar between the two intervals; however, subtle differences suggest a growing awareness of CBS. Targeted interventions in high-burden clinical subspecialties may encourage reporting and improve documentation of CBS.PMID:38550759 | PMC:PMC10976482 | DOI:10.1177/25158414241232285 (Source: Adv Data)

Retrospective study of the impact of diabetes on the severity and prognosis of COVID ‑19
Exp Ther Med. 2024 Mar 11;27(5):194. doi: 10.3892/etm.2024.12482. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTPatients with diabetes coexisting with viral infection tend to have poor outcomes, but the association between diabetes and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) prognosis is controversial at present. The present study reviewed and analyzed the data of 1,892 patients with COVID-19 admitted to Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital (Xi'an, China). Demographic, clinical, laboratory and treatment data as well as clinical outcomes were extracted from the electronic medical records and compared between patients with and without diabetes. ...

Impact of Parent Presence and Engagement on Stress in NICU Infants
Adv Neonatal Care. 2024 Apr 1;24(2):132-140. doi: 10.1097/ANC.0000000000001146. Epub 2024 Feb 7.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are exposed to frequent stressors that impact their neurodevelopmental outcomes. Parent presence and engagement are considered critical to improving infant outcomes, yet associations between cumulative NICU parent presence, engagement, and infant stress are infrequently examined.PURPOSE: To examine associations between NICU infant stress and the amount (hours per week) or frequency (days per week) of parent presence and skin-to-skin care (SSC).METHODS: A second...

Communication barriers faced by pharmacists when managing patients with hypertension in a primary care team: a qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: The communication barriers pharmacists faced when managing patients with hypertension involved multiple stakeholders. Many of the challenges resulted in patients having difficulty understanding and adhering to their management plan. Effective interventions to foster stronger interprofessional relationships and create a conducive platform of communication should be developed to address these communication barriers.PMID:38539081 | PMC:PMC10967190 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-024-02349-w (Source: Primary Care)

Early detection of nasopharyngeal carcinoma through machine ‐learning‐driven prediction model in a population‐based healthcare record database
ConclusionsML approaches using electronic medical records accurately predicted NPC occurrence. The risk prediction model serves as a low-cost digital screening tool, offering rapid medical decision support to shorten prediagnostic periods. Timely referral is crucial for high-risk patients identified by the model. (Source: Cancer Medicine)

Impact of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic on neoadjuvant chemotherapy use in patients diagnosed with epithelial type ovarian cancer
DiscussionsOvarian cancer patients diagnosed in the COVID-19 pandemic were more likely to receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy than patients diagnosed before the pandemic. Future research on patient outcomes and trends in the post-pandemic period are warranted. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Trends in the use of neuromuscular blocking agents, reversal agents and neuromuscular transmission monitoring: a single-centre retrospective cohort study
ConclusionOur data demonstrate that the implementation of NMT monitoring with automatic recording coincides with a gradual increase in the (documented) use of NMT monitoring and an increased use of sugammadex with a more precise dose. Factors associated with sugammadex use include higher age, ASA score, BMI, abdominal and thoracic surgery, higher rocuronium doses, emergency surgery and the use of NMT monitoring.Trial registrationN/A.Key points• Introduction of NMT monitoring with automatic recording coincides with an increase in (documented) use of NMT monitoring.• Sugammadex is more frequently used in patients with a ...
