The Impact of Palliative Care Consultation on Aggressive Medical Interventions in End-of-life Among Patients with Metastatic Breast Cancer: Insights from the U.S. National Patient Sample
CONCLUSION: While PCC can reduce end-of-life aggressive interventions, it was underutilized among patients with MBC in the end-of-life. A myriad of clinical and patient factors may still challenge timely consultation. We urge for future endeavors in developing strategies to remove barriers in the implementation, especially earlier in the disease course, to assure timely PC treatments and reduce discomfort amid aggressive interventions for MBC.PMID:38748597 | DOI:10.1177/08258597241253933 (Source: Journal of Palliative Care)

Poetry and the Meaning of Care
Health care is becoming more and more distanced. Clinicians must overcome not just mountains of data, burdensome electronic health records, and ever-increasing numbers of machines that separate us from patients, but more recently also navigate telemedicine and AI-driven chatbots. Physician-writer Dr Abraham Verghese and others have lamented that consequently we rely less on the physical exam and the connection it fosters with patients, as echocardiography and CT scans impersonally scrutinize them instead. So, a poem like “Even Joy” is a welcome corrective, a poignant reminder of the value of simple human touch in medic...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 3140: ResNet1D-Based Personal Identification with Multi-Session Surface Electromyography for Electronic Health Record Integration
bum Pan Personal identification is an important aspect of managing electronic health records (EHRs), ensuring secure access to patient information, and maintaining patient privacy. Traditionally, biometric, signature, username/password, photo identity, etc., are employed for user authentication. However, these methods can be prone to security breaches, identity theft, and user inconvenience. The security of personal information is of paramount importance, particularly in the context of EHR. To address this, our study leverages ResNet1D, a deep learning architecture, to analyze surface electromyography (sEMG) signals fo...

Quality of heart failure registration in primary care: observations from 1 million electronic health records in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area
CONCLUSIONS: While there is improvement over time, there are still substantial levels of over- and underregistration of HF, emphasizing the need for cautious interpretation of ICPC-coded data. The findings contribute to the understanding of HF registration issues in primary care and provide insights for improving registration practices.PMID:38741552 | DOI:10.1515/dx-2024-0009 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Machine learning in cardiac surgery: a narrative review
CONCLUSIONS: Studies utilizing high volume, multidimensional data such as that derived from electronic health record (EHR) data appear to best demonstrate the advantages of ML methods. Models trained on post cardiac surgery intensive care unit data demonstrate excellent predictive performance and may provide greater clinical utility if incorporated as clinical decision support tools. Further development of ML models and their integration into EHR's may result in dynamic clinical decision support strategies capable of informing clinical care and improving outcomes in cardiac surgery.PMID:38738250 | PMC:PMC11087616 | DOI:10....

What Complexity Science Predicts About the Potential of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning to Improve Primary Care
J Am Board Fam Med. 2024 Mar-Apr;37(2):332-345. doi: 10.3122/jabfm.2023.230219R1.ABSTRACTPrimary care physicians are likely both excited and apprehensive at the prospects for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Complexity science may provide insight into which AI/ML applications will most likely affect primary care in the future. AI/ML has successfully diagnosed some diseases from digital images, helped with administrative tasks such as writing notes in the electronic record by converting voice to text, and organized information from multiple sources within a health care system. AI/ML has less successfu...
