What is an opthalmologist's take on an internist doing a funduscopic examination?
Hello. I am a part time nephrologist / Internist who sees a large number of hypertensive and diabetic patients. Although I do send these patients to opthalmology for a formal dilated retinal exam (which is part of the diabetes management anyway), I do have a PanOptic ophthalmoscope which I fiddle around with now and then for someone who is having uncontrolled BP for an undilated exam. It's not where near as good as those retinal photographs in the textbooks, of course. But I have gleaned... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Preoperative considerations of new long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in diabetes mellitus
I've seen something about these drugs maybe replacing metformin as firstline treatment for DM2. Seems like this may become very common for us to see, and this is a nice review of the current concerns we may have: DEFINE_ME Full stomachs: "Nausea and vomiting are explained by direct central effects of GLP-1 and delayed gastric emptying. Surgery Showcase for Pre-Pods
I created this thread to show pre-pods what kinds of surgical cases you can do as a podiatrist. Of course, surgery isn't the only part of podiatry, you really need to have a good handle on medicine as well. The best surgeons are those who know when/how to avoid surgery. Some podiatrists sub-specialize in a certain area, like diabetic limb salvage (me), sports medicine, trauma, pediatrics, etc. and the surgical procedures and settings (i.e. hospital vs. surgery center) will vary. If... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

So you want to consider a fellowship?
Fellowships aren’t for everyone and you shouldn’t need one to be competent in normal podiatric medicine and surgery. But some individuals are driven to achieve levels beyond standard competence and strive to make the profession a better place. I did a fellowship with Prof. David Armstrong 2006-2007 at the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Diabetic Limb Salvage and Research. I did it to be mentored by Dr. Armstrong and gain experience in academics and research. I can honestly say that... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
