Body composition parameters and sarcopenia in adults with Down syndrome: a case-control study
CONCLUSIONS: Adults with DS have a higher prevalence of sarcopenia compared with the general population. This finding suggests that DS is associated with early muscle aging and calls for the design of interventions targeting the skeletal muscle to prevent or treat sarcopenia.PMID:38551714 | PMC:PMC10980647 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02680-9 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Deteriorated bone microarchitecture caused by sympathetic overstimulation in pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma
ConclusionsPPGL patients had significantly deteriorated bone microarchitecture and strength, especially in the trabecular bone, with an increased bone resorption rate. Our findings provide clinical evidence that sympathetic overstimulation may serve as a secondary cause of osteoporosis, especially in subjects with increased sympathetic activity. Role of active and environmental tobacco smoke on susceptibility to osteoporosis in women undergoing dual-X-ray absorptiometry
ConclusionThe study results demonstrate an association between passive smoke and Op in community-dwelling women already presenting with susceptibility to Op according to Italian essential assistance levels, suggesting that passive and active smoke are equivalent Op risk factors in women. Bone mineral density in adults growth hormone deficiency with different ages of onset: a real-world retrospective study
ConclusionThe annual changes of BMD show a different pattern in AGHD patients with varying ages of onset. Patients with CO AGHD have a lower bone mass, and in general, appropriate replacement therapy is necessary for long-term bone health in AGHD patients. (Source: Endocrine)

Impact of a Multicomponent Exercise Training Program on Muscle Strength After Bariatric Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial
ConclusionWhile absolute MS was not significantly improved with MEP, this study found significant enhancements in relative MS, particularly in dominant knee flexion post-MEP participation. Further research should explore different exercise intensities and frequencies to optimize postoperative MS recovery post-BS.Clinical Trial RegistrationClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02843048)Graphical Abstract (Source: Obesity Surgery)

The effect of a combined lifestyle intervention with and without protein drink on inflammation in older adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes
CONCLUSION: 13 weeks of combined lifestyle intervention, either with or without protein drink, reduced circulating adipokines and anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-1RA, and increased inflammatory ratios TNF-α/IL-10 and TNF-α/IL-1RA in older adults with obesity and T2D. Effect on CLIP was inversely related to baseline inflammatory status.PMID:38527636 | DOI:10.1016/j.exger.2024.112410 (Source: Experimental Gerontology)

Optimizing resistance training for body recomposition in postmenopausal women
AbstractWe investigated the effectiveness of a resistance training (RT) protocol with lower volume and lower load in the body recomposition of postmenopausal women, and to determine whether changes in body recomposition induced by RT would be associated with changes in physical performance, independently of confounding factors. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: I) Single set-high load (SSHL,n = 14, 1 set of 8 to 12 maximum repetitions), II) Single set-low load (SSLL,n = 15, 1 set of 25 to 30 maximum repetitions), and III) Multiple sets-high load (MSHL,n = 14, 3–6 sets of 8 to 12 maxi...

Secular Trends in Peak Bone Mineral Density: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999 –2018
This study aimed to investigate secular trends in peak BMD among young adults in the United States. Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999–2018, 3,975 males aged 19–28 years and 2370 females aged 31– 40 years were our target population for estimating peak lumbar spine BMD. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Generalized linear models adjusted for multiple covariates were used to examine the secular trends in peak BMD in males and females, respectively. Secular trends for peak lumbar spine BMD from 1999–2000 to 2017–2018 were not statistically significant in mal...

Patients with Osteoporosis Are at Higher Risk for Periprosthetic Femoral Fractures and Aseptic Loosening Following Total Hip Arthroplasty
This report provides an updated analysis for patients with osteoporosis following total hip arthroplasty (THA). The comorbidities of alcohol abuse, chronic kidney disease, cerebrovascular disease, obesity, and rheumatoid arthritis continue to be significant risk factors for periprosthetic femur fracture (PPFFx) and aseptic loosening in the population with osteoporosis. Patients with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometric (DEXA) scans were at risk for PPFFx regardless of femoral fixation method, and patients with DEXA scans with cementless fixation were at risk of aseptic loosening after THA. The patient population with severe o...

Pregnancy ‐associated osteoporosis following in vitro fertilization: A case report
Key Clinical MessageThis case report illustrates that in  vitro fertilization (IVF) may be a potential risk factor for pregnancy-associated osteoporosis (PAO), highlighting the need for awareness and monitoring of bone health in women undergoing IVF treatments. PAO is a rare disease resulting from an imbalance of calcium in the body during pregnancy and lactation and presenting with fragility fractures. PAO occurs in late pregnancy or early postpartum period. A 28-year-old woman who conceived through IVF experienced severe back pain 2 days after delivery. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine showed wedge-shaped fract...
