A comprehensive investigation of geoenvironmental pollution and health effects from municipal solid waste landfills
This study investigates human health risks associated with heavy metals (HMs) occurrence in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills. For testing of selected MSW landfills steps were involved, including site characterization, soil sampling and chemical testing, statistical analysis, as well as health risk assessment, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects. For the Polish landfill (Radiowo) the average HMs concentrations were found in the following order: Zn (52.74  mg/kg DM) >  Pb (28.32 mg/kg DM) >  Cu (12.14 mg/kg DM) >  Ni (4.50 mg/kg DM) >  Cd (3.49 mg/kg DM), while for the Czech landfi...

Body morphology and handgrip strength parameters of the female canoe slalom paddlers
Discussion: The results shows the significance of muscular strength and power for canoe slalom athletes and the importance of well-developed musculature in operating the boat in the unstable environment. Being a successful female canoe slalom athlete requires a well-developed musculature, maximizing strength capabilities while maintaining a low body weight through limited hypertrophy of the lower limbs and a low level of body fat. Comparison of the level of physical activity after the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic
ConclusionsSignificant differences in PA levels between the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia university students were identified. Slovakia showed the highest median PA measured as a MET score, and Poland showed the lowest. Compared to available pre-COVID studies it seems the total level of PA in the observed cohorts has not returned to the pre-COVID levels and students remain less active. Implementation of an advance care planning intervention in nursing homes: an international multiple case study
The objectives of the mySupport study was to adapt the application of the intervention for use in different countries, assess impact on family satisfaction and decision-making and , and identify costs and supportive conditions for the implementation of the intervention.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A multiple case study design was chosen where the nursing home was the case. Nursing homes were enrolled from six countries: Canada, Czech Republic, Italy, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom.RESULTS: Seventeen cases (nursing homes) participated, with a total of 296 interviews completed including family carers, nursi...

Whole genome sequencing and characterization of Pantoea agglomerans DBM 3797, endophyte, isolated from fresh hop (Humulus lupulus L.)
BackgroundThis paper brings new information about the genome and phenotypic characteristics of Pantoea agglomerans strain DBM 3797, isolated from fresh Czech hop (Humulus lupulus) in the Saaz hop-growing region. Although P. agglomerans strains are frequently isolated from different materials, there are not usually thoroughly characterized even if they have versatile metabolism and those isolated from plants may have a considerable potential for application in agriculture as a support culture for plant growth.MethodsP. agglomerans DBM 3797 was cultured under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, its metabolites were analyzed by...

On the forensic relevance of tattoos: distinguishing black inks with energy dispersive spectroscopy and backscattered scanning electron microscopy
ConclusionEDS and SEM were efficient to distinguish black tattoo inks. These are our preliminary outcomes on the use of EDS and SEM to analyze black tattoo inks. Thus, careful interpretation is necessary to avoid rash applications in human identification practice. (Source: Forensic Science, Medicine, and Pathology)

Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 216: Genetic Parameters for Limousine Interbeef Genetic Evaluation of Calving Traits
rý The aim of this study was to estimate across-country genetic correlations for calving traits (birth weight, calving ease) in the Limousine breed. Correlations were estimated for eight populations (Czech Republic, joint population of Denmark, Finland, and Sweden, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Estonia). An animal model on raw performance accounting for across-country interactions (AMACI) was used. (Co)variance components were estimated for pairwise combinations of countries. Fixed and random effects were defined by each country according to its national genetic evaluation system. The aver...

Normative-referenced values for health-related fitness among Czech youth: Physical fitness data from the study IPEN Adolescent Czech Republic
CONCLUSIONS: This study presents the most up-to-date sex- and age-specific normative-referenced percentile values for health-related fitness among Czech youth. Normative values may be useful for fitness and public health screening and surveillance, for example, by helping to identify youth with low fitness who might benefit from a fitness-enhancing intervention.PMID:38309706 | DOI:10.21101/cejph.a7645 (Source: Central European Journal of Public Health)

Possible effect of OAS1 and TMPRSS6 but not DPP4 and ZNF335 polymorphisms on COVID-19 severity in the Czech population
CONCLUSIONS: Common variants within OAS1 (rs4767027) and TMPRSS6 (rs855791) play some role in COVID-19 pathology in the Czech Caucasian population. Whether the depletion of minor allele carriers of these two variants is associated with increased COVID-19 mortality, needs to be analysed in an external confirmatory study.PMID:38309700 | DOI:10.21101/cejph.a7906 (Source: Central European Journal of Public Health)
