Do trees respond to pollution? A network study of the impact of pollution on Spruce growth from Europe
Environ Pollut. 2024 Apr 19:124012. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2024.124012. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTree rings have been reliably used as an environmental proxy over the past decades for environmental reconstructions, simulations and forecasting. In our study, we investigated whether tree-ring chronologies are impacted by pollution. We chose sites in the Krušné hory and the Krkonoše Mountains in the Czech Republic which have a known history of pollution. We sampled Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst) in both ranges and compared their chronologies. We found no significant difference in the overall radial growth in th...

The indirect costs of human papillomavirus-related cancer in Central and Eastern Europe: years of life lost and productivity costs
CONCLUSIONS: There is a high disease burden of HPV-related cancer-related deaths in the CEE region, with a large economic impact to society due to substantial productivity losses. It is critical to implement and reinforce public health measures with the aim to reduce the incidence of HPV-related diseases, and the subsequent premature cancer deaths. Improving HPV screening and increasing vaccination programs, in both male and female populations, could help reduce this burden.PMID:38638098 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2341572 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2024 Apr;74(4). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.006335.ABSTRACTThe taxonomic position of three actinobacterial strains, BCCO 10_0061T, BCCO 10_0798T, and BCCO 10_0856T, recovered from bare soil in the Sokolov Coal Basin, Czech Republic, was established using a polyphasic approach. The multilocus sequence analysis based on 100 single-copy genes positioned BCCO 10_0061T in the same cluster as Lentzea waywayandensis, strain BCCO 10_0798T in the same cluster as Lentzea flaviverrucosa, Lentzea californiensis, Lentzea violacea, and Lentzea albidocapillata, and strain BCCO 10_0856T clustered together with Lentzea ...

Genomic characterization of ST38 NDM-5-producing < em > Escherichia coli < /em > isolates from an outbreak in the Czech Republic
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2024 Apr 16:e0013324. doi: 10.1128/aac.00133-24. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 2-year national genomic screening in the Czech Republic identified a notable prevalence of the New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase 5 (NDM-5)-producing Escherichia coli sequence type 38 (ST38) in the city of Brno. Forty-two ST38 E. coli isolates harbored the blaNDM-5 gene on the chromosome. Virulence factors confirmed the persistence of these isolates through biofilm formation. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs)-based phylogeny and CRISPR assay typing showed minimal genomic variations, implying a clonally driven outb...

Challenges with hippocampal MR spectroscopy as a surrogate for pre-radiotherapy assessment of neurocognitive impairment in patients with brain metastasis
CONCLUSION: Borderline statistically significant correlations were observed with speculative interpretation underlying the challenges of hippocampal MRS as a surrogate for neurocognitive impairment. Further studies need to be done to ascertain the opportunities for imaging predictors of benefit from memory sparing radiotherapy.PMID:38623639 | DOI:10.5507/bp.2024.012 (Source: Biomedical Papers of the Medical Faculty of the Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub)

Tracing anthropogenic mercury in soils from Fe-Hg mining/smelting area: isotopic and speciation insights
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 13:142038. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.142038. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMercury (Hg) stable isotope ratios supplemented by Hg solid speciation data were determined in soils in a former Fe-Hg mining/smelting area (Jedová hora, Czech Republic, Central Europe). The dominant Hg phase in the studied soils was found to be cinnabar (HgS). A secondary form of soil Hg(II) was represented by Hg weakly and strongly bound to mineral (micro)particles, as revealed by thermo-desorption analysis. These Hg species probably play a key role in local soil Hg processes and biogeochemical cycling. The Hg isotopic...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 610: Characterization of Mycoviruses in Armillaria ostoyae and A. cepistipes in the Czech Republic
v Čurn Members of the genus Armillaria are widespread forest pathogens against which effective protection has not yet been developed. Due to their longevity and the creation of large-scale cloning of Armillaria individuals, the use of mycoviruses as biocontrol agents (BCAs) against these pathogens could be an effective alternative. This work describes the detection and characterization of viruses in Armillaria spp. collected in the Czech Republic through the application of stranded total RNA sequencing. A total of five single-stranded RNA viruses were detected in Armillaria ostoyae and A. cepistipes, including viruses...
