Fungal species causing candidiasis use distinct infection strategies
(Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona)) - Vaginal candidiasis (commonly known as vaginal thrush) affects 138 million women worldwide each year.- Researchers have studied four Candida species (which account for 90% of candidiasis cases), the pathways they use to infect the vaginal epithelium and the defence mechanisms of this epithelium.- The results of this international collaboration between the group headed by Dr. Toni Gabaldon (IRB Barcelona/BSC) and Dr. Bernhard Hube's laboratory (Hans Knoell Institute/ University of Jena) have been published in the journal Nature Microbiology. What Are Potential Complications of Breast Surgery?
Discussion Common reasons for seeing a breast surgeon would include management of benign or malignant masses with or without breast reconstruction, breast augmentation, and other reasons can be infection or trauma that need surgical treatment. The breast is formed starting around the 6th week of gestation by breast buds along the mammary line. Breasts then develop from the downgrowth of epithelia into the mesenchymal tissue, which continues to grow. Around 8-9 months a pit forms as entry into the lactiferous ducts. “Nipple inversion is caused either by failure of the lactiferous ducts to develop and grow during matur...

A marine microbiome antifungal targets urgent-threat drug-resistant fungi
New antifungal drugs are urgently needed to address the emergence and transcontinental spread of fungal infectious diseases, such as pandrug-resistant Candida auris. Leveraging the microbiomes of marine animals and cutting-edge metabolomics and genomic tools, we identified encouraging lead antifungal molecules with in vivo efficacy. The most promising lead, turbinmicin, displays potent in vitro and mouse-model efficacy toward multiple-drug–resistant fungal pathogens, exhibits a wide safety index, and functions through a fungal-specific mode of action, targeting Sec14 of the vesicular trafficking pathway. The efficacy...

In troubled times, a ritual walk can clear the mind and soothe the soul
A pilgrimage is healing because it encourages you to savour the momentCome autumn, as a way of defying the back-to-school doldrums brought on by a rapid shortening of the days, and to mark what feels like the true start of a year, I go on a pilgrimage. This year, more than ever, I crave the slow and steady rhythm of a walking pace, big skies, and cleansing wind and rain to shake off the cobwebs of a long confinement and to break the domestic routines of daily life. I want to connect to my own pumping heart and the natural world around me, re-oxygenate stale lungs and feel the muscles in my legs stretch and work.Since I ’...

International screening of the effects of a pathogenic fungus
(Radboud University Medical Center) The pathogenic fungus Candida auris, which first surfaced in 2009, is proving challenging to control. It is resistant to many fungicides and not easy to diagnose. Researchers from Radboud university medical center, Canisius-Wilhelmina Hospital (CWZ) and international colleagues have discovered that the human immune system recognizes the fungus well. The study has been able to pin-point the fungus' Achilles heel for new, effective drugs. Meanwhile, the threat posed by this emerging public health pathogen should not be underestimated.
