What Are Treatment Options for Pediatric Onycomycosis?
Discussion Onycomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails. It has a world-wide prevalence of 0.3% with some geographical variations such as in the U.S. it is 0.44%. It is an uncommon problem especially in children. It is very uncommon in those under 6 years and only very sporadic case reports in those under 2 years. The lower incidence is felt to be due to children’s faster nail growth, smaller surface to infect, reduced exposure to fungi, lower prevalence of tinea pedis and especially less cumulative trauma. Onycomycosis is more common in families (unsure if this is due to genetic factors or family members having m...

Do Men and Women Experience Bipolar Disorder Differently?
Bipolar disorder affects men and women in equal numbers, and the symptoms are essentially identical. But some key differences do exist—differences that might be due to biological factors, and social ones, too. For starters, research has consistently shown that women have higher rates of bipolar II disorder, “which typically presents as a chronic depressive disorder with periods of hypomania,” according to Candida Fink, MD, a board-certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist with a private practice in Westchester, N.Y. There’s a misconception that bipolar II disorder is less severe than bipolar I because mani...

'Mutation hotspot' allows common fungus to adapt to different host environments
(Brown University) A new study finds that samples of Candida albicans from patients frequently lack one copy of a vital master regulator, which gives them flexibility to lose the other copy and adapt to different environments. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

Fungus from the intestinal mucosa can affect lung health
(University of Cologne) Writing in the journal Cell, a research team from Cologne and Kiel describes the mechanism of 'immune cross-reactivity'. The immune system's reaction to Candida albicans in the intestine seems to amplify pathogenic immune processes in the lungs. In consequence, immune-compromised individuals may be at higher risk of health deterioration. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

Innovative, simple treatment to combat the Candida albicans fungus
(University of the Basque Country) A study led by the UPV/EHU has developed an innovative, simple treatment based uterine stem cells to combat the Candida albicans fungus, responsible for vaginal candidiasis disease Despite not being life-threatening, this disease, which is very widespread among women, reduces patient life quality owing to its symptoms (itching and stinging). This research has been published in the international Frontiers in Microbiology journal, a world leader in the field of microbiology. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

How Candida albicans exploits lack of oxygen to cause disease
(Umea University) Scientists from Ume å university have shown how the yeast Candida albicans can modulate and adapt to low oxygen levels in different body niches to cause infection and to harm the host. Studying adaption to hypoxic or anoxic niches is particularly fruitful, since it helps us to understand the pathogenicity of C. albicans and promotes the development of better therapy approaches. Details about the study can be found in a report recently published in the journal MBio, a publication of the American Society of Microbiology.
