Niche-specific microevolution of Candida glabrata (Nakaseomyces glabrata) during an infection
Fungal Genet Biol. 2024 Apr 13:103891. doi: 10.1016/j.fgb.2024.103891. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCandida glabrata (Nakaseomyces glabrata) is an emergent and opportunistic fungal pathogen that colonizes and persists in different niches within its human host. In this work, we studied five clinical isolates from one patient (P7), that have a clonal origin, and all of which come from blood cultures except one, P7-3, obtained from a urine culture. We found phenotypic variation such as sensitivity to high temperature, oxidative stress, susceptibility to two classes of antifungal agents, and cell wall porosity. Only isolate P...

Effects of simulated long-term exposure to bottled, neutral pH electrolyzed oxidizing water on the properties of denture base resins
Denture stomatitis can pose serious health risks, especially to older people. Chemical denture cleaning agents must be effective, yet not adversely affect the longevity of removable dentures. Ready-to-use (RTU) neutral pH electrolyzed oxidizing water (EOW) is an effective biocide against Candida albicans biofilms on denture resins, but the effects of daily disinfection with EOW on the physical and mechanical properties of resins have not been established. Pickering nanoemulsion loaded with eugenol contributed to the improvement of konjac glucomannan film performance
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 11:131495. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131495. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTKonjac glucomannan (KGM) is becoming a very potential food packaging material due to its good film-forming properties and stability. However, KGM film has several shortcomings such as low mechanical strength, strong water absorption, and poor self-antibacterial performance, which limits its application. Therefore, in order to enhance the mechanical and functional properties of KGM film, this study prepared Pickering nanoemulsion loaded with eugenol and added it to the KGM matrix to explore the improvement effect of P...

Unveiling the complexity of early childhood caries: < em > Candida albicans < /em > and < em > Streptococcus mutans < /em > cooperative strategies in carbohydrate metabolism and virulence
CONCLUSION: The symbiotic relationship between C. albicans and S. mutans, and their interactions through carbohydrate metabolism and environmental acidification, are key factors in the pathogenesis of ECC. A comprehensive understanding of these mechanisms is crucial for developing effective strategies to manage and treat ECC.PMID:38606339 | PMC:PMC11008315 | DOI:10.1080/20002297.2024.2339161 (Source: Journal of Oral Microbiology)

Peptide Extract from Red Kidney Beans, < em > Phaseolus vulgaris < /em > (Fabaceae), Shows Promising Antimicrobial, Antibiofilm, and Quorum Sensing Inhibitory Effects
In this study, peptides were extracted from the seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris (Fabaceae), and the antimicrobial activities of the extract were evaluated using microbroth dilution against five different microorganisms. The extract showed antimicrobial activity against all tested organisms with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 2.5 mg/mL, except for Candida albicans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which had MICs of 1.25 mg/mL. The extract was also bacteriostatic for all tested organisms. The crude peptide extract from Phaseolus vulgaris was further studied for its antibiofilm activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a com...

Biomimetic and multifunctional nanocomposites for precision fungi theranostics
Biomaterials. 2024 Apr 4;308:122561. doi: 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2024.122561. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFungi infection is a serious threat to public health, but an effective antifungal strategy remains a challenge. Herein, a biomimetic nanocomposite with multifunctionalities, including fungi diagnosis, antifungal adhesion, precise fungi elimination, and cytokine sequestration, is constructed for battling Candida albicans (C. albicans) infection. By screening a range of cells, we find that the polarized macrophage cells have the strongest binding tendency toward C. albicans. Thus, their membranes were exfoliated to cam...

Enzymatic Synthesis of Copolyesters with the Heteroaromatic Diol 3,4-Bis(hydroxymethyl)furan and Isomeric Dimethyl Furandicarboxylate Substitutions
This study explores the Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB)-catalyzed copolymerization of 3,4-BHMF with furan dicarboxylate isomers and aliphatic diols. The furanic copolyesters (co-FPEs) with higher polymerization degrees are obtained using 2,4-isomer, indicating CALB's preference. Material analysis revealed semicrystalline properties in all synthesized 2,5-FDCA-based co-FPEs, with multiple melting temperatures (Tm) from 53 to 124 °C and a glass-transition temperature (Tg) of 9-10 °C. 2,4-FDCA-based co-FPEs showed multiple Tm from 43 to 61 °C and Tg of -14 to 12 °C; one of them was amorphous. In addition, all co-FPEs s...
