Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1904: Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Kir6.2 Variants Reveals Potential Association with Diabetes Mellitus
In this study, we examined the effect of mutations on the Kir6.2 structure using bioinformatics tools and molecular dynamic simulations (SIFT, PolyPhen, SNAP2, PANTHER, PhD&SNP, SNP&Go, I-Mutant, MuPro, MutPred, ConSurf, HOPE, and GROMACS). Our results indicated that M199R, R201H, R206H, and Y330H mutations influence Kir6.2 structure and function and therefore may cause DM. We conclude that MD simulations are useful techniques to predict the effects of mutations on protein structure. In addition, the M199R, R201H, R206H, and Y330H variant in the Kir6.2 protein may be associated with DM. These result...

Corneal fibrosis: From in vitro models to current and upcoming drug and gene medicines
Adv Drug Deliv Rev. 2024 Apr 18:115317. doi: 10.1016/j.addr.2024.115317. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFibrotic diseases are characterised by myofibroblast differentiation, uncontrolled pathological extracellular matrix accumulation, tissue contraction, scar formation and, ultimately tissue / organ dysfunction. The cornea, the transparent tissue located on the anterior chamber of the eye, is extremely susceptible to fibrotic diseases, which cause loss of corneal transparency and are often associated with blindness. Although topical corticosteroids and antimetabolites are extensively used in the management of corneal fibros...

Development of Cell Culture Platforms for Study of Trabecular Meshwork Cells and Glaucoma Development
AbstractBackground:Various cell culture platforms that could display native environmental cue-mimicking stimuli were developed, and effects of environmental cues on cell behaviors were studied with the cell culture platforms. Likewise, various cell culture platforms mimicking native trabecular meshwork (TM) composed of juxtacanalicular, corneoscleral and uveal meshwork located in internal scleral sulcus were used to study effects of environmental cues and/or drug treatments on TM cells and glaucoma development. Glaucoma is a disease that could cause blindness, and cause of glaucoma is not clearly identified yet. It appears...

Risk Factors for Retinopathy of Prematurity in Preterm Infants in Kerman, Iran
CONCLUSION: BW and duration of hospitalization were significant risk factors for ROP in the current study. BW was also strongly associated with the need for therapy.PMID:38638625 | PMC:PMC11022032 | DOI:10.18502/jovr.v19i1.15437 (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic and Vision Research)

Contemporary Approach to Narrow Angles
J Ophthalmic Vis Res. 2024 Mar 14;19(1):88-108. doi: 10.18502/jovr.v19i1.15443. eCollection 2024 Jan-Mar.ABSTRACTGlaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Among all glaucoma types, primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) affects approximately 23 million people worldwide, and is responsible for 50% of glaucoma-related blindness, highlighting the devastating consequences of this disease. The main mechanism of PACG is relative pupillary block. High-risk populations are female gender, Asian ethnicity, high hyperopia, short axial length, and a thick/anteriorly positioned lens. This review discusses the cl...
