Microbial keratitis in Southern Malawi: a microbiological pilot study
CONCLUSIONS: In a resource-poor setting, a CIM can be used to safely sample the cornea in patients presenting with suspected MK, enabling identification of causative microorganisms by culture and PCR. Although the microbiological spectrum found was limited to the dry season, these preliminary results could be used to guide empirical treatment.PMID:38653537 | DOI:10.1136/bmjophth-2024-001682 (Source: Herpes)

A new intelligent system based deep learning to detect DME and AMD in OCT images
This study introduces a novel Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, aiming to identify and classify OCT retinal images into AMD, DME, and Normal classes. Leveraging CNN efficiency, including feature learning and classification, various CNN, including pre-trained VGG16, VGG19, Inception_V3, a custom from scratch model, BCNN (VGG16)\(^{2}\), BCNN (VGG19)\(^{2}\), and BCNN (Inception_V3)\(^{2}\), are developed for the classification of AMD, DME, and Normal OCT images. The proposed approach has been evaluated on two datasets, including a DUKE public dataset and a Tunisian pr...

"The blinding disease". The history of trachoma in Italians between the 19th and 20th centuries: colonial or national blindness?
Pathog Glob Health. 2024 Apr 21:1-6. doi: 10.1080/20477724.2024.2342623. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTrachoma is one of the oldest known causes of blindness in humans and it is caused by the intracellular Gram-negative bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis serovars A, B, Ba and C. Its transmission has historically been related to poorness, overcrowded housing and scarce hygiene. We have traced the history of trachoma in Italy in the 19th and 20th centuries, among people living in Italy, those who immigrated to America and the population in the colonies, with a focus on Libya (1912-1943). Trachoma knowledge and perception in It...

Geniposide Attenuates Oxygen-glucose Deprivation/Recovery-induced Retinal Ganglion Cell Injury via Akt/Nrf-2 Signaling Pathway
CONCLUSION: Hence, it can be suggested that Gen provides neuroprotection against the OGD/R-induced injury of R28 cells by activating the Akt/Nrf-2 signaling pathway, which is beneficial for the clinical treatment of glaucoma.PMID:38644710 | DOI:10.2174/0109298673272406231212054710 (Source: Current Medicinal Chemistry)
