Associations between posttraumatic stress disorder and eating disorder symptoms among women veterans
This study aims to expand the literature by examining associations between PTSD and ED diagnoses and symptoms in this population. We assessed probable PTSD diagnosis and symptom clusters (intrusion, avoidance, arousal and reactivity, and negative alterations in cognition and mood [NACM]), as well as probable Binge Eating Disorder (BED) diagnosis and ED subscales (dietary restraint, shape/weight overvaluation, and body dissatisfaction) in a sample of women veterans (N = 371). We investigated significance at the standard p < .05, and the Bonferroni-corrected p < .005 cut-off to adjust for experiment-wise error. Overall...

Reliability of the original and brief versions of the Eating Disorder Examination in binge-eating disorder
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that the EDE can be administered reliably by multiple interviewers to assess adults with BED. However, internal consistency was mostly subpar. Tests of reliability and other psychometric properties (e.g., validity) in other patient groups such as children with BED are warranted.PMID:38311600 | DOI:10.1002/oby.23993 (Source: Obesity)

Russel's sign: Unilateral hand callosities in bulimia nervosa
J R Coll Physicians Edinb. 2024 Jan 29:14782715241228325. doi: 10.1177/14782715241228325. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA dermatology consult was sought for a 34-year-old female who presented with repeated vomiting and loss of weight, quantified to be around 13 kgs over the preceding 4 months. Examination revealed strictly unilateral callosities and few superficial erosions over the right distal hand, third and fourth metacarpophalangeal joints, and interphalangeal joints of the second digit, consistent with Russell's sign in bulimia nervosa. History of binge eating followed by purging by forced vomiting was found on dieta...

Shared genetic risk between anorexia nervosa and cardiovascular disease events: Evidence from genome ‐wide association studies
DiscussionSome loci affect the liability to AN and CVD in opposite directions and the shared genetic effects may not be consistent across all CVD events. Our results provide further evidence suggesting that the elevated cardiovascular risk in AN may not be due to shared genetic underpinnings, but more likely a downstream consequence of the disease. Prevalence and related factors of eating disorders in pregnancy: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsThis study is important as it is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to reveal the global prevalence of EDs in pregnant women and related factors. Continuing routine screening tests to detect EDs during pregnancy may contribute to taking special preventive measures for risk groups and protecting mother –child health.Trial registrationPROSPERO registration number (CRD42022324721), date of registration: 10/05/2022. A systematic review of weight stigma and disordered eating cognitions and behaviors
Body Image. 2024 Jan 24;48:101678. doi: 10.1016/j.bodyim.2023.101678. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWeight stigma is persistent across contexts and is associated with disordered eating cognitions and behaviors. This systematic review aimed to examine the existing literature that has explored the relationship between weight stigma and disordered eating cognitions and behaviors. We specifically examined three dimensions of weight stigma - experienced, anticipated, and internalized - and adopted an inclusive conceptualization of outcomes related to disordered eating (including constructs such as binge eating, body dissatisfac...

Harsh, unpredictable childhood environments are associated with inferior frontal gyrus connectivity and binge eating tendencies in late adolescents
Appetite. 2024 Jan 22;195:107210. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107210. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHarsh, unpredictable childhood environments (HUCE) are associated with obesity older in life, but knowledge of how HUCE affect binge eating tendencies is lacking. Five hundred and one late adolescents aged 16-22 were recruited to finish resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging scan, behavioral measures including retrospective recall of childhood environmental harshness and unpredictability, binge eating tendencies and demographics. Three hundred and seventy-six of participants further completed the computerized visu...

Investigating the Theory of Clinical Perfectionism in a Transdiagnostic Eating Disorder Sample Using Network Analysis
Behav Ther. 2024 Jan;55(1):14-25. doi: 10.1016/j.beth.2023.05.001. Epub 2023 May 12.ABSTRACTEating disorders are deadly psychiatric illnesses, with treatments working for less than half of individuals who seek treatment. The transdiagnostic theory of eating disorders proposes that eating disorders share similar maintaining symptoms, such as what this theory calls clinical perfectionism (i.e., high levels of concern over mistakes and personal standards). However, it has been difficult to examine the interrelationship of specific aspects of perfectionism, beyond assessing moderation effects, which have generally not found su...

Outcomes in people with eating disorders: a transdiagnostic and disorder-specific systematic review, meta-analysis and multivariable meta-regression analysis
World Psychiatry. 2024 Feb;23(1):124-138. doi: 10.1002/wps.21182.ABSTRACTEating disorders (EDs) are known to be associated with high mortality and often chronic and severe course, but a recent comprehensive systematic review of their outcomes is currently missing. In the present systematic review and meta-analysis, we examined cohort studies and clinical trials published between 1980 and 2021 that reported, for DSM/ICD-defined EDs, overall ED outcomes (i.e., recovery, improvement and relapse, all-cause and ED-related hospitalization, and chronicity); the same outcomes related to purging, binge eating and body weight status...
