Congenital syphilis in a preterm newborn with gastrointestinal disorders and postnatal growth restriction
ConclusionsOur report highlights less common clinical CS manifestations like gastrointestinal disorders including feeding difficulties, colon stenosis and malabsorption leading to postnatal growth delay. Moreover, it underlines how prematurity may worsen the clinical evolution of such congenital infection, due to the additional pathogenic effect of possible associated diseases and/or conditions like sepsis, hypoxic/ischemic injury, or use of drugs. CS may be observed also in high-income countries, with high rates of antenatal screening and availability of prenatal treatment. A multidisciplinary network must be guaranteed t...

Treatment of internal rectal prolapse in children: A cross sectional study
CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of internal rectal prolapse can be made based on specific symptoms and barium enema radiology before the anesthesia test for children and determine the patient's treatment path and prevent additional operations such as colostomy-pulmonary with misdiagnosis of Hirschsprung.PMID:36536742 | PMC:PMC9758361 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.104886 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Basic practices for gastrointestinal ultrasound
AbstractThe standard diagnostic modalities for gastrointestinal (GI) diseases have long been endoscopy and barium enema. Recently, trans-sectional imaging modalities, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, have become increasingly utilized in daily practice. In transabdominal ultrasonography (US), the bowel sometimes interferes with the observation of abdominal organs. Additionally, the thin intestinal walls and internal gas can make structures difficult to identify. However, under optimal US equipment settings, with identification of the sonoanatomy and knowledge of the US findings of GI diseases, US ...

Intussusception Management in Children: A 15-Year Experience in a Referral Center
ConclusionsNonoperative management has a high overall success rate and low complication and recurrence rates. Saline enema reduction presents the highest effectiveness, and should be considered the first-line treatment. (Source: Indian Journal of Pediatrics)

Trends of Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates in Korea: Korean National Cancer Screening Survey 2005-2020
CONCLUSIONS: There has been substantial improvement in CRC screening rates in the general Korean population. However, it is necessary to determine why the screening rate has stabilized since 2014 and identify barriers that cause disparities in CRC screening rates among populations with lower socioeconomic status.PMID:35466090 | DOI:10.5009/gnl210419 (Source: Gut and Liver)

Computed tomographic colonography versus double-contrast barium enema for the preoperative evaluation of rectal cancer
ConclusionCTC may be a viable alternative imaging modality in some cases. However, BE should be employed in anterior wall cases near the anal canal and CRT cases. (Source: Surgery Today)
