Colobronchial fistula: the pathogenesis, clinical presentations, diagnosis and treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: CBF is a rare but can not be ignored disease. Anything which may induce the direct or indirect connection between colon and lung tissue may result in CBF. Productive cough with foul smelling sputum is the characteristic symptom. Radiological investigations such as barium enema and/or CT scan with multiplanar reconstruction are valuable for the confirmation of CBF. Surgery based on the etiology is the foundation of treatment. Choosing How to Screen for Colorectal Cancer
The article by Choi, et al. in the Seminars [1] is an excellent review of the different modalities available for colorectal screening. While one often hears that the best screening test is the one that the patient will accept (and there is truth to this axiom), for the most part one can infer from the paper by Choi, et al. that barium enemas and CT colonography are, respectively, no longer appropriate and not yet appropriate for this purpose. Minimal abdominal incisions
Publication date: Available online 3 February 2017 Source:Journal of Coloproctology Author(s): João Carlos Magi, Bruna Fernandes dos Santos, Lucas Rodrigues Boarini, Pietro Dadalto de Oliveira, Galdino José Sitonio Formiga Minimally invasive procedures aim to resolve the disease with minimal trauma to the body, resulting in a rapid return to activities and in reductions of infection, complications, costs and pain. Minimally incised laparotomy, sometimes referred to as minilaparotomy, is an example of such minimally invasive procedures. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility and utility of laparoto...

Outcome of Laparoscopic Treatment of Anorectal Malformations in Children
ConclusionsOur experience confirms that laparoscopic-assisted anorectal pull-through enabled complete correction of ARM in the meanwhile avoiding damage to the rectum and anus. Also, the technique of double bipolar myostimulation of muscle complex in laparoscopic ARM might lead to these better results. (Source: World Journal of Surgery)

Pediatrician's knowledge on the approach of functional constipation
Conclusions: Our results show that pediatricians do not adhere to current recommendations for the management of childhood functional constipation, as unnecessary tests were ordered and the first-line treatment was not prescribed.Resumo Objetivo: Identificar o conhecimento do pediatra quanto ao manejo diagn óstico e terapêutico da criança com constipação intestinal funcional. Technical standardization of laparoscopic repair of Morgagni diaphragmatic hernia in children: results of a multicentric survey on 43 patients
ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, this is the largest series published in the literature on this topic. Laparoscopic CMDH repair is well standardized: The full-thickness anterior abdominal wall repair using non-resorbable suture with interrupted stitches is the technique of choice. Postoperative outcome was excellent. Recurrence rate was very low, about 2% in our series. We believe that children with CMDH should be always treated in laparoscopy following the technical details reported in this paper. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Pre-procedural scout radiographs are unnecessary for routine pediatric fluoroscopic examinations
ConclusionPre-procedural scout abdomen radiographs are unnecessary in routine barium and water-soluble enema, upper GI series, and voiding cystourethrogram pediatric fluoroscopic procedures and can be substituted with a spot fluoroscopic last-image hold. (Source: Pediatric Radiology)

Colonic hemangioma, a diagnostic challenge in young adults with lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding
We report a case of a 15-year-old girl who presented with the passage of bright red blood after defecation. Diagnostic studies, including plain abdominal radiography, barium enema study, computed tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging, and colonoscopy, revealed characteristics specific to a diagnosis of colonic hemangiomas. Awareness of the clinical features of colonic hemangiomas may help avoid inappropriate surgical intervention in these patients. (Source: Formosan Journal of Surgery)

A 5-Year Follow-Up of Study Patients With Asymptomatic Iron-Deficiency Anemia Using a Nurse-Led Pathway
A protocol-driven, systematic pathway was developed to allow rapid and coordinated investigation of patients with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) in a nurse-delivered outpatient setting. The study objective was to assess the safety and efficacy of the pathway by 5-year outcome data for the exclusion of gastrointestinal (GI) malignancy. This is a 5-year follow-up study of 122 patients entered onto the pathway with negative initial upper and lower GI investigations. The study was conducted at Hereford County Hospital NHS Trust (a district general hospital serving 220,00 people). Clinical outcomes of patients at 5 years and serv...

Evaluation of clinicians' knowledge and practices regarding medical radiological exposure: findings from a mixed-methods investigation (survey and qualitative study)
Conclusions Medical radiological exposure is frequently underestimated and rarely explained to patients. With a clear understanding of medical radiological exposure and proper communication tools, clinicians will be able to accurately inform patients. (Source: BMJ Open)
