Reshaping the fabric of health: a call for improving the respiratory health of textile workers in low- and middle-income countries
Extract The textile industry is an important contributor to the economies of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) [1]. Over the past two decades, textile and garment production has markedly shifted towards LMICs with lower labour and production costs, more accessibility to raw materials, such as cotton, and fewer stringent regulatory measures than high-income countries (HICs) [2]. As a result, Asian nations such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Vietnam have emerged as major manufacturing hubs of the textile industry. This shift has led to Asia accounting for 55% of the world's textile and apparel exports while genera...

Interested to start a venture but worried about the future: Investigating the role of resilience in fear of career uncertainty and entrepreneurial intention
This study aimed to extend this understanding by exploring how specific fears, such as fear of career uncertainty and fear of perceived inability, affect EI and how resilience impacts these fears and their interaction with EI. This study tested a mediation model on a sample of young university students in Bangladesh (n = 553), using a two-phase survey (before and after the COVID-19 pandemic) and applying the partial least squares - structural equation model in Smart PLS 4. The findings indicated that fear of career uncertainty had a significant negative influence, and resilience had a significant positive influence on EI. ...

Nutrient density of Bangladeshi foods and its application in planning diet for pregnant women
This study aimed to identify foods that are rich sources of the seven micronutrients (iron, zinc, calcium, thiamine, ribofla vin, vitamin A, and vitamin B12) of public health concern for the Bangladeshi population.. This study developed a metric termed “naturally nutrient-rich score 7 (NNR7) ” specifically for third-trimester pregnant women to identify nutrient-dense foods. Further, it computed the nutrient adequacy score (NAS) of the top NNR7-scored foods for seven micronutrients to assess the extent (percent) to which foods can meet pregnant women ’s recommended dietary allowances (RDA). A linear programming techni...

Evaluation of non-cancer risk owing to groundwater fluoride and iron in a semi-arid region near the Indo-Bangladesh international frontier
AbstractGroundwater quality in Hili, a semi-arid border region at Indo-Bangladesh border, was investigated in the post-monsoon season of 2021, succeeded by assessment of probabilistic health risk arising from fluoride (F−) and iron (Fe) intake, with the hypothesis that groundwater quality of the region was not satisfactory for human consumption and health, considering earlier reports on high groundwater F− and Fe in few of the neighboring districts. All water samples were found to be potable in terms of Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl−, SO42 − and  NO3−, ,  but F− and Fe exceeded prescribed safe limits for drinking water in a...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 111: Respiratory Syncytial Virus-Associated Deaths among Children under Five before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Bangladesh
Chowdhury Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of acute lower respiratory infections in young children worldwide. RSV-associated deaths in children are underreported in Bangladesh. We analyzed hospital-based surveillance data on severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs) in under-five children before (August 2009–February 2020) and during the COVID-19 pandemic (March 2020–March 2022). Using the World Health Organization definition, we identified SARI cases in 14 tertiary-level hospitals. Nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs were collected for real-time reverse-transcriptas...
