Development of gelatin/agarose active coatings functionalized with Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil for enhancing storability of 'Booth 7' avocado
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Oct 20:127516. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.127516. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNovel active coating from gelatin/agarose (GA) functionalized with Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil (OGO) had been developed as a medium to evaluate their properties before being applied for avocado preservation. The resultant coating films showed enhanced mechanical, water-barrier, bactericidal, antioxidant, and UV-shielding properties by adding OGO. The best tensile strength (2.91 MPa) and flexibility (45.82 %) was found in the GA film containing 5 % w/w OGO (GA-OGO-5). Furthermore, this coating formulation pres...

Survey of the feeding management of giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) and tamanduas (Tamandua tetradactyla) in the EAZA ex ‐situ programme
AbstractFeeding giant anteaters and tamanduas as insectivorous species provides a lot of challenges for zoological institutions. In the last decades an in-house mixture, called ‘Dortmund mixture’, was the most common feed used in giant anteaters and tamanduas in many countries within the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria ex-situ Programme (EEP). Some nutritional problems occurred due to imbalances in the diets. The more recent nutritional recommendations for bot h species advise an adapted and balanced complete feed formulated for insectivorous species due to different problems arising with an in-house mixed fee...

Comprehensive Review on Fruit Seeds: Nutritional, Phytochemical, Nanotechnology, Toxicity, Food Biochemistry, and Biotechnology Perspective
This study also goes into in-depth detailing on creating useful food items out of these seeds, such as bakery goods, milk products, cereal-based goods, and meat products. It also identifies enzymes purified from these seeds along with their biochemical applications and any research openings in this area.PMID:37755640 | DOI:10.1007/s12010-023-04674-9 (Source: Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology)

Clinical outcome of endovascular therapy using a VIABAHN VBX-covered stent for complex aortoiliac artery disease: the AVOCADO II study
AbstractClinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of a balloon-expandable covered stent (CS) for aortoiliac occlusive disease (AIOD). However, the real-world clinical outcomes and the underlying factors remain unclear. We assessed the clinical outcomes and factors associated with primary patency after implantation of a balloon-expandable CS for patients with complex AIOD. This prospective multicenter observational study enrolled 149 consecutive patients undergoing VIABAHN® VBX-CS (W.L. Gore& Associates, Flagstaff, AZ) implantation for complex AIOD (age, 74  ± 9 years; male, 74%; diabetes mellitus, 46%; rena...

Microbiota and its antibiotic resistance profile in avocado Guatemalan fruits (Persea nubigena var. guatemalensis) sold at retail markets of Ibarra city, northern Ecuador
ConclusionsThe results indicated that ready to eat avocados contained detectable levels of MAR bacteria, including methicillin resistant (MR)-STAPHY, which may act as a potential vector for the spread of antibiotic resistance. To achieve the increase of the production and marketing of Fuerte cultivar in Ecuador, it is vitally important to consider valuable strategies to protect the fruits at the early ripe stage in future. Thus, it is crucial to set up efficient control measures and develop coordinated strategies to guarantee the microbiological quality of the food. (Source: Frontiers in Microbiology)

BIoecology of Oncideres cervina Thomson (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) on Persea americana Mill. (Lauraceae)
The objective was to record O. cervina girdling branches of Persea americana Mill. (Lauraceae) for the first time, check the number of oviposition incisions (Noi) as a function of the diameter of branch sections, period of emergence, and describe the larval-pupal chamber. Individuals of O. cervina were observed, for the first time, in P. americana orchards in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The middle section of branches (40-60 cm interval) had higher number of incisions. Girdled branches with a diameter of 40-50 mm had higher number of them. Adults emerged from November through January. Larval-pupal boreholes had ...
