Opening for Child Fellowship in my same city - Conflicted
Hey everyone, I'm a PGY3 and there is an opening for a child psych spot at a local university, and I am conflicted. I do enjoy my child outpatient days, particularly teenagers struggling with trauma, eating disorders, depression and anxiety; but I also find it exhausting. And I am not a big fan of autism. I also find parents exhausting, and that every patient visit takes forever due to overbearing parents. I haven't had any inpatient child experience either. I guess the pros are that it... Early Intervention Psychological Evaluations - Rates?
Hello all! I have been working as a school psychologist in NYC conducting assessments with students from early childhood education to high school over the last decade. I recently became licensed and am also entering the realm of EI. I am quickly finding out that licensed psychologists are in high demand to conduct diagnostic evaluations for autism at this level. So, there are lots of EI agencies emailing me and calling me and asking me for my rate. The problem I am experiencing is that the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

treading into unknown waters - patient's parent was in traumatic accident and dad wants me to check in with kiddo.
So I did an eval on a kiddo who had a very classic aspergers vibe (like referred to a type of bugs as "phasmids" on a certain test). His parent was shot while waiting for him at a service session. She seems to be out of the woods and is having a miraculous recovery, but is still in the hosp. Father reached out to me to see if I could meet with him to just see how he doing. Of course, I said "yes." I did tell dad this kind of stuff is new to me, so we will be figuring out together and I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Any Students with Learning Disabilities?
Anyone here have a learning disability? How are you coping? I am a first year vet student and feel like I won't ever be able to keep up with the workload. I have autism, adhd, and dyslexia. Anatomy is killing me because I can't pronounce or spell any of the structures so its really hard to be able to study. In high school and undergrad I usually had to study at least double what the average person did, but with the intense workload there's not enough hours in the day to do that. I do have... Diagnosing autsim without a formal assessment?
On internship, I was told that psychologists at my site wouldn't diagnose autism other than provisionally without referring out to an assessment specialist for confirmation, but it was never explained why. Is it really frowned upon for psychologists to diagnose autism spectrum disorder directly from the DSM-5, especially if they've worked with people on the spectrum before? A colleague of mine has been asked to write a letter confirming a client's diagnosis for housing reasons, and it got... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

ABA center (private equity funded) denied family because they speak Spanish
Just met with a family. I am currently doing an eval - the kid has textbook autism - and it's basically just going through the motions. But the parents speak Spanish. Dad and mom can get by in English (basically they have emerging BICS). I gave them a list of 5 places to get on the waiting list for. They met with one place - scheduled an intake - and when they showed up, they basically were like "oh, you're not a good fit for us." The family felt like it was pretty racist. They take the... Interprogram Influence in Admissions
Without going into detail about my particular application stats and keep this relevant to as many people as possible, I am wondering about my chances of getting into particular md-phd programs. I have put together a list of labs whose research I am interested in, and plan on reaching out soon. Many of these labs are at institutions where one of the following is the case: strong candidate for research program, med school is a reach strong candidate for medical school, research... Diversity topic help
So I am an older non-traditional student (30) and was planning on using my background working in the psych field for about the past 7 years as my main diversity and discussing how I have gained quite a few important skills during my experience. I have worked in a non-profit with homeless pscyh patients, worked in ABA therapy for kids with autism, and recently got back into another psych facility for work. I feel that this could be good. However, another thing that makes me unique is that I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Diversity Essay Advice
So I am currently stuck thinking about what I should write about. I could write about: 1. Immigration, struggling here in America but being able to make it out and move overseas for high school with my family in a very diverse country and learn from people around me there and how I've come back here for college to give back to those communities in clinical and non-clinical settings. 2. The unique clinical experience of providing care for autistic children and how it has shaped my... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
