Heme oxygenase-1 attenuates seawater drowning-induced acute lung injury through a reduction in inflammation and oxidative stress - Sun XQ, Wu C, Qiu YB, Wu YX, Chen JL, Huang JF, Chen D, Pang QF.
OBJECTIVE: Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) plays a critical protective role in various insults-induced acute lung injury (ALI) through its strong anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-apoptotic properties, but its protective role and mechanism on seawater aspi... (Source: SafetyLit)

Podcast: Antioxidants for male subfertility
As well as strategies that are focused mainly on the woman, interventions to help couples to become pregnant include some to directly help men who are subfertile and those targeting men where the couple has unexplained subfertility. One of the Cochrane Reviews with this focus on men looks at giving them oral supplementation with antioxidants, and new evidence was added to this in March 2019. We asked Rebecca Mackenzie ‐Proctor from the Auckland City Hospital in New Zealand to bring us to up-to-date..Many cases of male subfertility are thought to be due to the damaging effects of oxidative stress on sperm, with some estim...

Antioxidant puts up fight, but loses battle against protein linked to Alzheimer's disease
(Iowa State University) New research may explain why an antioxidant that protects the brain is also associated with deterioration in areas susceptible to Alzheimer's disease. The antioxidant, superoxide dismutase or SOD1, improves cognition, but an Iowa State University research team found SOD1's protective benefits dramatically weaken when levels of tau proteins -- a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease -- increase. Peptides that mimic ‘good cholesterol’ reverse inflammatory bowel disease in mice
FINDINGSPeptides that mimic  the function of HDL cholesterol, which has been dubbed “good cholesterol,” can treat the underlying inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, according to new research in mice. The same work revealed new details on how IBD can develop and what other types of drugs may wo rk to treat the disease.BACKGROUNDThe most common types of IBD, a chronic inflammatory disease of the digestive tract, are Crohn ’s disease and ulcerative colitis. There are few effective treatments for IBD, and a majority of patients will eventually need surgery, according to previous studies. Res...

What Makes Two Materials “Identical”?
On April 26, FDA released a final guidance on Characterization of Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) Used in Orthopedic Devices1. The draft of this guidance was issued on February 12, 2016. The guidance addresses four different types of UHMWPE: conventional, highly crosslinked, highly crosslinked containing antioxidants, and non-conventional. The parameters of characterization include material description, sterility, biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and chemical properties. For the base material, FDA “recommends” the inclusion of information on starting ...

p62 and Nrf2 are essential for exercise-mediated enhancement of antioxidant protein in muscle
(Nagoya City University) Regular exercise prevents oxidative stress-induced muscle wasting, at least partially by improving the antioxidant defense system. In the present study, we found that regular endurance exercise enhances the expression of p62/SQSTM1 (p62) and its phosphorylation at Ser 351 thereby dissociating nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) from Keap1, which results in increased Nrf2 nuclear translocation and DNA binding activity. These findings suggest that Ser 351 phosphorylation of p62 plays a critical role in this regulation. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

Is Honey Healthy? Here ’s What Experts Say
Because it comes from nature — from bees, no less — honey has a health halo. But is honey really healthy? Here’s what dietitians say about the health benefits of honey. What is honey made of? Honey is made from nectar. “Bees collect the dilute-sugary nectar of flora plants, produce an enzymatic activity after ingestion, regurgitate it into honey cells and evaporate a high percentage of the water out of it, producing a super-sweet viscous liquid known as honey,” explains Dana Hunnes, a senior dietitian at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The sweet substance is mostly fructose and glucose &mda...

Smart antioxidant-containing polymer responds to body chemistry, environment
(University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) Oxidants found within living organisms are byproducts of metabolism and are essential to wound-healing and immunity. However, when their concentrations become too high, inflammation and tissue damage can occur. University of Illinois engineers have developed and tested a new drug-delivery system that senses high oxidant levels and responds by administering just the right amount of antioxidant to restore this delicate balance.
