Member-led short conference: Plant-rich dietary patterns and health
Dietary patterns rich in plant foods are associated with improved health and reduced non-communicable disease risk. Fruit and vegetables (FV) are a cornerstone of healthy dietary recommendations. FV include a diverse collection of plant foods that vary in their energy, nutrient, and dietary bioactive contents. FV have potential health-promoting effects beyond providing basic human nutrition needs in humans, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, yet current global intakes of FV are well below recommendations. Given the importance of FV for health, interventions that promote FV intake are warranted.This...

Compound derived from turmeric essential oil has neuroprotective properties
(Kumamoto University) Researchers from Kumamoto University, Japan have found that a component derived from turmeric essential oil, ar-turmerone, and its derivatives act directly on dopaminergic neurons to exert a neuroprotective effect on tissue cultures of a Parkinson's disease model. The effect appears to be due to the enhancement of cellular antioxidant potency through Nrf2 activation. The researchers believe that the ar-turmerone derivatives identified in this study can be utilized as new therapeutic agents for Parkinson's disease. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

Localized the gene for blue plum skin
(Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG)) A new study published at the scientific journal Frontiers in Plant Science by CRAG and IRTA researchers reveals the gene that determines Japanese plum skin colour due to the presence or absence of antioxidant pigment anthocyanin. This work provides a highly efficient molecular marker for early selection of coloured and non-coloured fruits in plum breeding programmes, with potential applications in other Rosaceae species. Scientists reveal elusive inner workings of antioxidant enzyme with therapeutic potential
(DOE/Oak Ridge National Laboratory) The enzyme manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) plays a critical role in maintaining human health by keeping the amount of harmful reactive oxygen molecules in cells under control. By using neutron scattering at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, researchers have now obtained a complete atomic portrait of the enzyme, revealing key information about its catalytic mechanism. The work could help experts develop MnSOD-based treatments and design therapeutics that mimic its antioxidant behavior. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)
