Structurally dynamic self-healable hydrogel cooperatively inhibits intestinal inflammation and promotes mucosal repair for enhanced ulcerative colitis treatment
Biomaterials. 2023 May 31;299:122184. doi: 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2023.122184. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHydrogels are a class of biocompatible materials with versatile functions that have been increasing explored for the localized treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC), but various mechanical stimuli may cause premature hydrogel breakage and detachment, impeding their further clinical translation. Here we report a multifunctional mechanically-resilient self-healing hydrogel for effective UC treatment, which is synthesized through the host-guest interaction between dopamine/β-cyclodextrin-modified hyaluronic acid (HA-CD...

The efficacy and mechanism of salmeterol against influenza A virus in vitro and in vivo
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 May 7;119:110226. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.110226. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInfluenza A virus (IAV) is the most harmful pathogen to human beings among the various subtypes of influenza virus, which can lead to immune response, cause serious inflammation and damage to the lung. Salmeterol is a candidate compound with anti-IAV activity screened by virtual network proximity predication. In this paper, we further evaluated the pharmacodynamics of salmeterol against IAV in vivo and in vitro. The results showed that salmeterol could inhibit the activity of three IAV strains (H1N1, H3N2 and H1N1 s...

Selective adsorption and separation of methylene blue by facily preparable xanthan gum/amantadine composites
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Apr 28:124640. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.124640. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this work, xanthan gum-based composites were successfully graft-modified by amantadine (XG-Fe3+/AM) with higher adsorption capacity and selectivity on recycling cationic dye (methylene blue, MB) from aqueous solution. The adsorption equilibrium of MB could be achieved approximately within 5 min when the initial concentration was 100 mg/L, and the maximum adsorption capacity was up to 565 mg/g. After 5 desorption-regeneration cycles, the removal rate of XG-Fe3+/AM for MB could still be as high as 95 % with slight d...

Belly dancer syndrome improved by withdrawal of droxidopa and amantadine
Key Clinical MessageA man hospitalized for cerebral infarction developed drug-induced belly dancer syndrome, which improved after withdrawal of droxidopa and amantadine. Drugs that modulate dopamine neurotransmission have been reported to be associated with this syndrome. When belly dancer syndrome is suspected, clinicians should consider drug-induced abdominal dyskinesia and medication withdrawal. (Source: Clinical Case Reports)

Off-time Treatment Options for Parkinson ’s Disease
AbstractMotor fluctuations (MF) are deemed by patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) as the most troublesome disease feature resulting from the increasing impairment in responsiveness to dopaminergic drug treatments. MF are characterized by the loss of a stable response to levodopa over the nychthemeron with the reappearance of motor (and non-motor) parkinsonian clinical signs at various moments during the day and night. They normally appear after a few years of levodopa treatment and with a variable, though overall increasing severity, over the disease course. The armamentarium of first-line treatment options has widened ...

Rapid symptom control in neuroleptic malignant syndrome with electroconvulsive therapy: A case report
ConclusionBrisk identification of potentially life-threatening NMS and NMS-like states, including malignant catatonia, warrants a trial of ECT. ECT’s theoretical mechanisms of action coincide with the theoretical pathophysiology of the conditions. It is a viable and safe treatment option for reducing mortality. With prompt initiation of ECT, we obtained rapid control of a condition with a potentially high mortality. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Optimising recovery of consciousness after coma. From bench to bedside and vice versa
DISCUSSION: Personalised sensory stimulation, median nerve stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), amantadine and zolpidem all have favourable risk-benefit ratios and are easy to implement in clinical practice. These treatments should be proposed to every patient with chronic DoC. Comprehensive patient management should also include regular lifting, pain assessment and treatment, attempts to restore sleep and circadian rhythms, implementation of rest periods, comfort and nursing care, and a rehabilitation program with a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in this field. More invasive treatments may ...
