IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 2329: Patient Safety Culture in a Tertiary Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study
This study was carried out in a tertiary hospital to analyze PS culture among the professionals and to determine the strengths and weaknesses that influence this perception. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out. The AHRQ Questionnaire on the Safety of Patients in Hospitals (SOPS) was used. A high perception of PS was found among the participants. In the strengths found, efficient teamwork, mutual help between colleagues and the support of the manager and head of the unit stood out. Among the weaknesses, floating professional templates, a perception of pressure and accelerated pace of work, and loss of releva...

Misdiagnosis in the Emergency Department
This Viewpoint offers 3 insights in response to the AHRQ report on diagnostic errors made in US emergency departments: focus on the delivery systems instead of individuals, establish ways to set definitions and assess error rates, and design safe delivery systems to prevent errors. Primary Care's Challenges and Responses in the Face of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Insights From AHRQ's Learning Community
Ann Fam Med. 2023 Jan-Feb;21(1):76-82. doi: 10.1370/afm.2904.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic dramatically disrupted health care systems and delivery in the United States. Despite emotional, psychological, logistical, and financial stress, primary care clinicians responded to the challenges that COVID-19 presented and continued to provide essential health services to their communities. As the lead federal agency for primary care research, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) identified a need to engage and support primary care in responding to COVID-19. AHRQ initiated a learning community from December 2020-N...

Promoting health equity with HBCUs: Breaking away from structural racism
Despite efforts to improve the nation's health, not all individuals have access to high-quality health care and major disparities in health outcomes persist. Health care disparities are defined as “racial or ethnic differences in the quality of health care that are not due to access-related factors or clinical needs, preferences, and appropriateness of intervention” (Smedley et al, 2003, pp. 3–4). In 2021, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality highlighted that Black populatio ns experienced the worst quality of care for 43% of quality measures when compared with White groups, and “disparities in all doma...

Anesthesiologist Staffing Ratio and Surgical Outcome —Reply
In Reply We thank the readers for their interest and comments. Some common themes emerged across the Letters. First, we wish to reiterate that the study ’s data and discussion do not assert unsafe or safe staffing ratio thresholds. There are financial and access to care implications to various staffing ratio models, which must be incorporated along with the current data when establishing anesthesiologist staffing ratios in a particular facility. N ext, several comments questioned the choice of primary composite outcome and whether alternative outcome definitions may have resulted in different (null) results. Consistent w...

A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study of Nurses Immediately Before and During the Covid-19 Pandemic: Implications for Action
The Surgeon General (2022) recently issued a public advisory declaring healthcare clinician burnout to be an urgent public health issue in need of immediate action. The American Hospital Association (AHA) in a March 1, 2022, letter to Congress proclaimed workforce challenges a national emergency that demanded immediate attention (AHA, 2022). There is little doubt that many hospitals failed to perform well during the Covid-19 emergency (Joint Commission, 2021; Fleisher et al., 2022). Bloodstream infections, which had declined 31% in the 5-years preceding the pandemic increased 28% in the pandemic's first months (Patel, et a...

Practicing health equity in involuntary discharges to overcome disparities in dialysis and kidney patient care
Purpose of review Potential causes and consequences of involuntary discharge (IVD) of patients from dialysis facilities are widely unknown. So, also are the extent of racial disparities in IVDs and their impact on health equity. Recent findings Under the current End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) program Conditions for Coverage (CFC), there are limited justifications for IVDs. The ESRD Networks oversee dialysis quality and safety including IVDs in US dialysis facilities, with support from the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ) and other stakeholders. Whereas black Americans constitute a third of US...

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the hyperuricemia risk from certain metals
AbstractThe relationship between exposure to certain metals and the risk of hyperuricemia (HUA) has biological plausibility, yet prior studies have presented inconsistent findings. We aim to clarify the relationship between exposure to certain metals and HUA using a systematic review and meta-analysis approach. We searched the Web of Science, Embase, MEDLINE, Pubmed, Corchrane and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases from inception through December, 2021 in order to identify studies that assessed the relationships between metals and the risk of HUA. Data were pooled by random-effects models and expressed as po...

Socioeconomic predictors of cost and length of stay for erythroderma: a cross-sectional analysis of the national inpatient sample
AbstractErythroderma is an uncommon but serious dermatologic disorder that often requires hospitalization for diagnosis and treatment. However, little is known about predictors influencing cost and patient outcomes. The present study sought to characterize the sociodemographic factors that predict patient outcomes and hospital cost. Data were obtained from the 2016 –2018 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) provided by the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for patients of any age with a primary or secondary diagnosis of exfoliative dermatitis. Regression analyses were ...

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 14691: The Role of Gender in the Association between Mental Health and Potentially Preventable Hospitalizations: A Single-Center Retrospective Observational Study
useppe Di Martino Psychiatric disorders and substance abuse are barriers that limit access to timely treatment and can lead to Potentially Preventable Hospitalizations (PPH). The aim of this study is to identify the role played by gender in the association between mental health and PPH. Hospital discharge records (HDRs) from the Local Health Authority of Pescara (Italy) from 2015 to 2021 were examined and PPH were measured according to Prevention Quality Indicators (PQIs) provided by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. In total, 119,730 HDRs were eligible for the study and 21,217 patients fell into the PQI ...
