Tackling Overdose Epidemic Will Require Addressing Disparities in SUD Prevention, Care
Despite efforts to address the epidemic of deaths from drug overdose in the United States, drug-overdose deaths are rising faster in Black, Latinx, and American Indian and Alaska Native populations than in the White population.“Numerous trials have documented the efficacy of medications for opioid use disorder and other SUD interventions. But such treatments are often less available to members of historically marginalized groups than to White patients,” noted Carlos Blanco, M.D., Ph.D., of the National Institute on Dr ug Abuse (NIDA), Elisabeth U. Kato, M.D., M.R.P., of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, a...

Influencing Discharge Efficiency: Addressing Interdisciplinary Communication, Transportation, and COVID-19 as Barriers
Purpose: At one tertiary, academic medical center, two general medicine units averaged 94% and 97% occupancy causing strain on patient throughput. This project was implemented at these two comparable general medicine units, totaling 64 beds. On each of these units, Pareto analyses on causal factors related to discharge order to exit time (DOTE) were performed. DOTE was defined as the period in minutes from when a provider orders a discharge to when the patient actually exits a room. Prime DOTE reduction opportunities were elicited that highlighted the need to address coordination of hospital discharge transportation; t...

Embedded emergency department physical therapy versus usual care for acute low back pain: a protocol for the NEED-PT randomised trial
BMJ Open. 2022 May 24;12(5):e061283. doi: 10.1136/bmjopen-2022-061283.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Low back pain is a common problem and a substantial source of morbidity and disability worldwide. Patients frequently visit the emergency department (ED) for low back pain, but many experience persistent symptoms at 3 months despite frequent receipt of opioids. Although physical therapy interventions have been demonstrated to improve patient functioning in the outpatient setting, no randomised trial has yet to evaluate physical therapy in the ED setting.METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a single-centre cluster-randomised trial of an emb...

This study is an analysis of the State Inpatient Database and State Emergency Department Database, which are restricted-access, publicly available datasets that are mainta ined by the AHRQ. One of the provisions of the Data Use Agreement is that no data observation involving less than or equal to 10 observations is to be published. This measure was put in place by AHRQ to protect individual patients’ privacy and to prevent the potential disclosure of personal inform ation. (Source: Surgery)

Improving patient and clinician safety during COVID-19 through rapidly adaptive simulation and a randomised controlled trial: a study protocol
Introduction COVID-19 required healthcare systems to iteratively adapt for safe and up-to-date care as knowledge of the disease rapidly evolved. Rates of COVID-19 infections continue to fluctuate and patients without COVID-19 increasingly return to the emergency department (ED) for care. This leads to new challenges and threats to patient and clinician safety as suspected patients with COVID-19 need to be quickly detected and isolated among other patients with non-COVID-19-related illnesses. At the front lines, emergency physicians also face continued personal safety concerns and increased work burden, which heighten stres...
