Implementing a Fall Prevention Protocol to Reduce Fall Rates Among Inpatients With Cancer
Clin J Oncol Nurs. 2023 Sep 15;27(5):533-538. doi: 10.1188/23.CJON.533-538.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Globally in healthcare delivery, inpatient falls and fall-related injuries contribute to unsafe patient care environments. On two inpatient oncology units, the frequency of patient falls had increased, despite the use of a fall screening tool.OBJECTIVES: This project aimed to determine whether implementing the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) 3B Scheduled Rounding Protocol would reduce the average daily fall rate and number of fall-related injuries on two adult inpatient oncology units.METHODS: This quantitative,...

Failure to rescue as a patient safety indicator for neurosurgical patients: are we there yet? A systematic review
AbstractFailure to rescue (FTR) is a standardized patient safety indicator (PSI-04) developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to assess the ability of a healthcare team to prevent mortality following a major complication. However, FTR rates vary and are impacted by non-modifiable individual patient characteristics such as baseline frailty. This raises concerns regarding the validity of FTR as an objective quality metric, as not all patients have the same baseline frailty level, or physiological reserve, to recover from major complications. Literature from other surgical specialties has identified f...

Improving antimicrobial use through better diagnosis: The relationship between diagnostic stewardship and antimicrobial stewardship
Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol. 2023 Sep 4:1-8. doi: 10.1017/ice.2023.156. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) exist to optimize antibiotic use, reduce selection for antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms, and improve patient outcomes. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is essential to optimal antibiotic use. Because diagnostic testing plays a significant role in diagnosing patients, it has one of the strongest influences on clinician antibiotic prescribing behaviors. Diagnostic stewardship, consequently, has emerged to improve clinician diagnostic testing and test result interpretation. Antimi...

Investigating Cardiac Arrhythmias among Patients With Williams Syndrome in the United States: An Analysis Using the 2016 to 2020 National Inpatient Sample
The recent study by Deitch et al1 found various cardiac conduction abnormalities in 74 patients with Williams syndrome at their center. We proceeded to provide additional data from the 2016 to 2020 National Inpatient Sample, a set of yearly deidentified hospitalization records, through the Health Care Utilization Project, along with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and nationwide partners.2 We used the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification code “Q93.82” to identify patients with Williams syndrome during that period. Healthcare consolidation and the impact on surgical care delivery
This study has several findings of interest. The authors note, as expected, that healthcare systems hub hospitals tend to be larger, in metropolitan/urban areas and have academic affiliations. Not surprisingly, the degree of surgical centralization varies significantly across healthcare systems. (Source: American Journal of Surgery)
