A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study of Nurses Immediately Before and During the Covid-19 Pandemic: Implications for Action

The Surgeon General (2022) recently issued a public advisory declaring healthcare clinician burnout to be an urgent public health issue in need of immediate action. The American Hospital Association (AHA) in a March 1, 2022, letter to Congress proclaimed workforce challenges a national emergency that demanded immediate attention (AHA, 2022). There is little doubt that many hospitals failed to perform well during the Covid-19 emergency (Joint Commission, 2021; Fleisher et al., 2022). Bloodstream infections, which had declined 31% in the 5-years preceding the pandemic increased 28% in the pandemic's first months (Patel, et al., 2021) with similar disappointing trends in other infections, falls, and pressure ulcers (Rosenthal, et al., 2022; AHRQ, 2021).
