Current Status of Anti-Reflux Surgery as a Treatment for GERD
Medicina (Kaunas). 2024 Mar 21;60(3):518. doi: 10.3390/medicina60030518.ABSTRACTAnti-reflux surgery (ARS) is an efficient treatment option for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Despite growing evidence of the efficacy and safety of ARS, medications including proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) remain the most commonly administered treatments for GERD. Meanwhile, ARS can be an effective treatment option for patients who need medications continuously or for those who are refractory to PPI treatment, if proper candidates are selected. However, in practice, ARS is often regarded as a last resort for patients who are unresponsi...

Epidemiology and Prognostic Significance of Cough in Fibrotic Interstitial Lung Disease
Conclusion: Cough is common in patients with IPF and non-IPF fibrotic ILD, with increasing cough severity over time irrespective of ILD-targeted therapy. Patient-reported cough severity has prognostic implications on health-related quality of life, disease progression, and survival in fibrotic ILD.PMID:38536110 | DOI:10.1164/rccm.202311-2101OC (Source: American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine)

Causal association of gastroesophageal reflux disease on irritable bowel syndrome: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study
Conclusion:This study provides evidence that the presence of GERD increases the risk of developing IBS, and it is observed from the reverse MR results that IBS did not increase the risk of GERD. (Source: Frontiers in Genetics)

FLIP in Clinical Practice: When Is It Helpful?
AbstractPurpose of ReviewFunctional lumen imaging probe (FLIP) Panometry is as an important tool in the diagnosis and management of esophageal disorders.Recent FindingsUsing high-resolution impedance planimetry, FLIP assesses esophagogastric junction (EGJ) and esophageal body distensibility as well as the contractile response to distension (secondary peristalsis) at the time of sedated endoscopy. These features can be incorporated to classify esophageal motility, which often parallels high-resolution manometry (HRM) and the Chicago Classification (CCv4.0). The role of FLIP Panometry has been evaluated in multiple clinical ...

In females, salivary secretion was significantly lower in patients with severe reflux esophagitis than in healthy controls
ConclusionAmong females, the salivary secretion was significantly lower in severe RE patients than in HCs. This reduction in salivary secretion may contribute to the pathophysiology of severe RE in females. (Source: Esophagus)

The Role of Inflammatory Biomarkers in Mediating the Effect of Inflammatory Bowel Disease on nonmalignant Digestive System Diseases: A Multivariable Mendelian Randomized Study
CONCLUSIONS: The evidence suggests that UC is associated with an elevated risk of AP and IBS, and IL-6 may be responsible in AP. CD is associated with an increased risk of developing CeD. Implementing a proactive monitoring program for assessing the risk of gastrointestinal diseases in UC patients, particularly those with elevated IL-6 levels, may be of interest. In addition, the presence of AP and IBS may indicate the presence of UC. Preventing CeD is an essential consideration in the therapeutic management of patients with CD.PMID:38529201 | PMC:PMC10963109 | DOI:10.1155/2024/1266139 (Source: Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology)

Potassium-Competitive Acid Blocker Versus Proton Pump Inhibitor: A Pilot Study on Comparable Efficacy in the Treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux-Related Cough
In conclusion, vonoprazan may be comparable to esomeprazole in cough symptom relief in GERC during the 2-month treatment period, but possibly provides better gains on classic reflux symptoms and quality-of-life. The long-term efficacy of P-CABs on GERC may be worth further exploration.
