Help planning next steps for getting clinical experience
I applied this last cycle and didn't get in, with just 1 interview and waitlist. My stats are good (517 MCAT, 3.85 GPA). The feedback I got was that I need more clinical experience, as all I had was working as a caregiver for 1 academic year. I'm non-trad and have a full-time job that's not healthcare related. The options I'm looking at are either: a) Some sort of hospital based clinical volunteering where I can get a lot of hours after work/on weekends b) Taking an evening EMT course that... Can a DO match Diagnostic Radiology without research?
Hi all, OMS3 here. Came in wanting to do Radiology but at this point haven't done anything notable. No red flags, but no research or other ECs. I really hate the research/twitter/networking game. I spent 6-7 months on a research project and it went nowhere. I'm an older student with a family and have no will or desire to do those things. I just want to work hard, learn medicine and do very well on Step 2, and then practice community medicine after residency. Don't need an academic program... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Texas Academic Fresh Start Megathread
Hey folks! I’ve talked to several people this year who are interested in AFS or would be great AFS candidates who feel overwhelmed by the process, so figured I would start a thread for y’all to ask questions. I went through the process this year and got in via TMDSAS (9 interviews, 2 pre-matches). My GPA went from a 2.7 to a 3.8 overnight. It’s a confusing process but can be really helpful and is basically made for non-trads who struggled with college the first go around but got their... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do I have a huge red flag on my application?
On my last semester prior to graduation around 2 years ago, I took Orgo 2 but ultimately decided to withdraw from the course due to my relatively poorer academic performance that semester (due to death of a close friend). Because Orgo 2 wasn't a requirement for my degree (engineering), I graduated anyway. Fast forward 2 years, I decided to take orgo 2 this summer, since I'm applying to schools this year, but it was at a community college due to financial constraints. Anyways, I got my grade... PICU to Peds Anesthesia Advice?
I am currently a PICU fellow and loving my anesthesia rotations. I plan on pursuing another fellowship in anesthesia and heard some programs and large academic centers like Johns Hopkins allow PICU trained fellows to pursue a 2 year anesthesia fellowship While I'm yet to talk to my attendings, does any one have more information on how to pursue this route, what programs typically offer such type of fellowship, and can we operate in the ORs' similar to a peds fellowship trained... Thought about pension/retirement benefits?
I'm graduating next year and is deciding between academic environment vs. large practice such as Kaiser. For KPNC the pay is north 450K, eligible for pension after 10-15 years services. For me this seems like a really good deal given the stable income stream on retirement. What do you think about this pension? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

3.7 sGPA, 3.8 cGPA but Poor SMP 2.8 GPA
I'm applying to 29 MD schools this cycle. I have all the hours and unique experiences. I have a 3.8 uGPA and 3.7 sGPA but I joined a SMP program and had a family member die my first semester causing me to have two Cs. I've never gotten a C before in all my academic education. The next semester was better with As and Bs no Cs. I will retake those two classes this fall to get As in them and a cumulative GPA of 3.0. My MCAT last year was 496 and this year 508 (125/125/129/129). So it's a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Optional COVID essay
For a few schools I am applying too, they ask "Share any disruptions in your academic/work/personal life related to COVID-19 that you would like the us to consider." I didn't have much of any disruptions outside of classes going online which everyone experienced. I was a student-athlete that had that season canceled but I was redshirting that year due to rehabing an earlier hamstring injury. Stayed for the following season. Should I leave it blank(N/A) or something along the lines of "I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
