Private equity owned fellowships
I'm specifically applying for surgical retina this year, but probably applies to fellowships broadly. I've asked around in academia and no one is sure what to say. There are some great retina fellowships out there that have been acquired by PE in the last couple of years. How do you think PE affects fellowship training? Personally I imagine clinic might run more efficiency? Not sure how it would change surgical numbers. Would appreciate any insight (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How many patients you see in clinic in fellowship?
Hello everyone, What is the average number of patients you have seen in clinic per day as a fellow in first, 2nd and 3rd year? I'm a fellow in a academic/community hybrid program. We are seeing 7-10 in first year, ~15 in second year and upto 20 in third year. This is not a fellow run clinic. It is very busy and always thought to be as 'more patients you see more learning you'll get', which is true but it seems to increase work load/documentation at the same time which cuts down on study... Do non-academic attending jobs care about research done in residency?
See title. Don't see a reason why they would but just curious. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Dads of Private Practice - how much time did you take off for paternity leave?
Work in a fee for service PP group and can take off as much time a I want but don't get paid a cent. For those of you out there in eat what you kill PP who have children, how much unpaid time off did you take around the birth of your kid? And do you wish you took more, or less? Happy to hear about others' experiences too from the employed or academic world. The big difference though I think is that for you guys paternity leave is both defined and paid. Mention 4-week voluntary LOA for Level 1 in "Was your medical education/training extended or interrupted" on ERAS?
My school for some reason made people take a whole LOA if you wanted 4 more weeks for boards even though we had 8 weeks of vacation and it ended up using 4 (graduating on time). They even put in a whole new elective "study rotation" the class of 2025 to not put a chunk of class in LOA but at the time I took it it was a LOA. It was marked as a voluntary LOA on MSPE. In terms of potential PD doubts about academic ability, my Level 2 score was decent, and I took step 1 & 2 as well, did alright... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

West Virginia program cuts
West Virginia University Slashes Majors and Cuts Staff Despite Protests The West Virginia University Board of Governors voted to cut 28 academic programs and eliminate 143 faculty jobs in favor of what they say is a necessary step toward financial viability. www.wsj.com Just want to get faculty perspectives. Do these sort of things worry you, or do you find clinical/counseling psych is shielded, as a field? I ask mainly because I have research career aspirations. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How will a medical LOA affect my residency application?
Hi all, I'm an MS3 at a mid-tier MD school who took a medical LOA between my 2nd and 3rd year (1 year, it was for mental health but to my understanding my school just stated it as a medical LOA in good academic standing - currently trying to get in touch with student affairs to clarify what it's going to look like on my MSPE). I'm trying to figure out what I want to do now and the two specialties that stand out to me are anesthesia and EM (I know.) On the whole, I think I will be a decent...
