My sister applied to medical school 3 cycles ago, was pretty successful in admissions, and is now in her 3rd year. I am applying this cycle.

Job at a new cancer center
I'm a 2nd-year fellow at a great institution entertaining the idea of working at a new university cancer center that will begin clinical operations the year before my joining. Would research within a course count as research experience?
In a microbiology course that I've taken, we were given complete freedom in setting up an at-home experiment to investigate fermentation in food. There weren't any instructions, so each student was responsible for choosing the hypothesis, the design, the materials, ensuring safety, collecting data, and choosing literature from the beginning. I’m a California resident who went to T20-30 CA schools for both undergrad and med school, and wants to end up in academic medicine.
