Sibling in Medical School
Hi everyone -- My sister applied to medical school 3 cycles ago, was pretty successful in admissions, and is now in her 3rd year. I am applying this cycle. She and I are 2 years apart in age and are extremely close. We are very alike as people and have lived very similar lives (same upbringing obviously, same undergrad, same academic interests, same activities/experiences when we went to school together). Obviously, as I am younger, it would be a lie if I said my choices haven't been at... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Academic inconsistencies essay
Essay: Please explain in more detail (in less than 1500 characters) anything that would help us understand any gaps or delays in your education, academic missteps, or personal challenges not listed elsewhere. Should I discuss the fact that I am a career changer here and that my early (10+ years ago) academic credentials no longer apply? I don't want to appear that I'm making an excuse about my previous mediocre grades, but I would like to try and explain the extent of relevant work... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Academic vs Hybrid vs PP
Hoping to get some discussion going on the pros/cons of these for myself and future trainees. For some starting points of talking: Academia doesn't seem to be very chill anymore but if you have good fellows that makes life easier. There's the possibility of skills outside your specialty atrophying a bit too. For those who like it there is the engagement of working with trainees and teaching others, maybe getting to know other clinical services better and doing more advanced imaging or... Job at a new cancer center
I'm a 2nd-year fellow at a great institution entertaining the idea of working at a new university cancer center that will begin clinical operations the year before my joining. From my understanding, there are only two surg oncs, two med oncs, and a rad onc. No fellowship program (yet?), but there is an IM residency program and medical school. I anticipate a lack of academic mentorship at the new university cancer center may restrict my career g, growth but the idea of developing a quality... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Would research within a course count as research experience?
In a microbiology course that I've taken, we were given complete freedom in setting up an at-home experiment to investigate fermentation in food. There weren't any instructions, so each student was responsible for choosing the hypothesis, the design, the materials, ensuring safety, collecting data, and choosing literature from the beginning. I wrote an 11-page paper on the effects of ash content in flour on baked goods' microbiome. I received academic credit for completion, of course. Since... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Academic Internships Insights for Small Animal Rotating
Hi! Sorry if this discussion has already been posted recently - I've not been keeping up with forums. Just wanted to know if recent graduates of academic internship programs can give a review to the institution in which they did a small animal internship at. I'm a 4th year and looking to go into dermatology residency (unless I fall in love with something else haha) Particularly I'm interested to know if: 1) you were happy(ish)? Were other interns happy? what about... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Geographic Mobility for Residency/Fellowship/Professorship
I’m a California resident who went to T20-30 CA schools for both undergrad and med school, and wants to end up in academic medicine. I’ve heard that getting into residency at an institution where you would want to do fellowship, and doing fellowship somewhere increases your chance of professorship at the same institution (of course as long as you don’t piss people off). I want to stay in CA for residency to be closer to family, but ultimately am really excited about a particular highly... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
