GSE243677 The Role of Vitamin D in Emiliania huxleyi: A Microalgal Perspective on UV-B Exposure
Contributors : Or Eliason ; Sergey Malitsky ; Irina Panizel ; Ester Feldmesser ; Martin Sperfeld ; Einat SegevSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Emiliania huxleyiAn essential interaction between sunlight and life involves the production of vitamin D through exposure to ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. While extensively studied in vertebrates, the role of vitamin D in non-animal eukaryotes like microalgae remains unclear. Emiliania huxleyi, a microalga inhabiting shallow ocean depths exposed to UV-B radiation, is well-suited for this research. Our results show that E. huxleyi can...

Drug repositioning for idiopathic epilepsy using gene expression signature data
Bioinformation. 2022 Oct 31;18(10):845-852. doi: 10.6026/97320630018845. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTEpilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, affecting millions of patients with a substantial economic and human burden. About 30-40% of epileptic patients remain un-treated after the therapeutic option. Genetic or idiopathic epilepsy count about 40% of total epilepsy patients, showing a maximum percentage for drug-resistant epilepsy. Since the last century basic approach to understanding disease progression and drug discovery has been through the prism, exploring all possible causes and treatment options. Here ...

Vitamin D in hypoparathyroidism: insight into pathophysiology and perspectives in clinical practice
AbstractHypoparathyroidism (HypoPT) is a rare endocrine disorder characterized by the absence or insufficient parathyroid hormone production resulting in chronic hypocalcemia. Complications of HypoPT include perturbation of several target organs. The conventional treatment consists of the administration of active vitamin D, namely calcitriol. Regarding vitamin D status, few data are available, mostly in HypoPT subjects supplemented with parent vitamin D. In addition, perturbation of vitamin D metabolism has been poorly investigated, as well as the contribution of altered vitamin D status on the clinical expression of the d...

Efficacy and safety of high-dose intramuscular vitamin D2 injection in type 2 diabetes mellitus with distal symmetric polyneuropathy combined with vitamin D insufficiency: study protocol for a multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, and placebo-controlled trial
This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intramuscular injection of high-dose vitamin D (HDVD) in T2DM with DSPN combined with vitamin D insufficiency. Methods and analysisWe will conduct a multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, and placebo-controlled trial in four large hospitals. All eligible participants will be randomly assigned to either the vitamin D2 supplement or placebo control group and injected intramuscularly monthly for 3 months. Additionally, anthropometric measurements and clinical data will be collected at baseline and 3 months. Adverse events will be collected at 1, 2, and 3 months. The prim...

Association of periodontitis with handgrip strength and skeletal muscle mass in middle-aged US adults from NHANES 2013-2014
CONCLUSION: The present study highlights the need of further prospective research to investigate the nature and direction of the relationship between periodontitis and sarcopenia indicators. Future studies can support the screening, prevention and clinical management of sarcopenia and periodontitis, and emphasize the interdisciplinary and complementary approach between the disciplines of geriatric medicine and periodontology.PMID:37386343 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02471-2 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Associations between vitamin D levels and periodontal attachment loss
ConclusionIncreasing total VD (below 111  nmol/L) and VD3 levels may be beneficial to periodontal health. VD2 levels above 5.07 nmol/L were a risk factor for severe periodontitis.Clinical relevanceThe present study reports that different vitamin D levels may serve as different associations with periodontal attachment loss progression.
