Ten rules to get your vitamin D just right
Restoration of vitamin D is one of the most powerful health strategies to have come along in years. Combine this with other Wheat Belly strategies and you have an exceptionally effective way to reverse the factors that allow numerous modern health conditions such as diabetes (type 1 and 2), hypertension, bone thinning, arthritis, depression, and autoimmune diseases. Vitamin D is such a crucial factor in health that you would therefore think that most doctors would be experts in vitamin D. Sadly, that is not the case. The majority of mainstream medical doctors are woefully ignorant, do not read the science nor try to unders...

Doctor: “ I don ’ t believe in supplements. ”
Patricia shared her recent experience of having to endure the rants of her doctor: “Well, I guess that I am officially undoctored! I have been going to the same internist for two years and she has always said that she knows nothing about supplements. But that was okay, as I do know something about them. “During this time, my medication has not changed, blood work was the same, with almost the same results each time. Just this week, she kind of went ballistic, repeated that she knows nothing about supplements, but does not believe in them, cannot imagine why people take them, told me that they were totally screw...

How important is Vitamin D?
FACT: A vitamin D deficiency may result in as much as a 50 percent increased potential for diabetes. FACT: A vitamin D deficiency puts you at a higher risk for cancer, especially breast, prostate, colon, ovarian, and melanoma. VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY is a widespread phenomenon with significant implications for health. In modern society vitamin D deficiency is the rule, rather than the exception. While we can blame more severe cases of deficiency on grains, it also commonly occurs independent of grain consumption. The restoration of vitamin D levels is second only to grain elimination when considering the most powerful healthy...

Futuring the EHR: Features Which Should Be In Most EMRs/EHRs (But For Some Reason Aren’t)
By HAYWARD ZWERLING, MD I have been in the health information technology field since 1990 when I began creating ComChart EMR. It was a labor of love which ultimately evolved into a small business. From 2004 until 2012, ComChart EMR had amongst the highest KLAS rating of all EMRs in the small ambulatory care group. From 2011 until 2015, ComChart EMR was certified by the ONC for Meaningful Use Stage I. Unfortunately, the technical requirements arising from Meaningful Use mandates and changes in market conditions required that I stop selling ComChart EMR in 2015. As a result of the 2.5 decades I spent creating ComChart EMR, I...

The Wheat Belly lifestyle BEGAN with heart health
Debbie posted this comment on the Wheat Belly Facebook page: “I posted a few weeks back about our scare from our primary care doctor. My husband had a calcium score of 1200. We panicked! Messaged Dr. Davis and went the next day to a cardio doctor and had a stress test, ultrasound, and blood test (inflammatory markers). Got him on recommended supplements per Dr Davis. “Latest update: Cardio doctor says, being as you started ‘Wheat Belly’ back in October, 2014, your score could have been higher and already started to improve, we don’t know. What we DO know is, because of this new way of eating,...

Does sunscreen make you Vitamin D deficient?
Angela asks…My husband recently read an article (from Australia, but I can’t remember the source now) claiming that we shouldn’t be using sunscreens. I think the basis of the article was that many people are vitamin D deficient, and that applying sunscreen prevents the production of vitamin D. It suggested that the risk of skin cancer was low compared to the vast benefits of vitamin D. In all your experience/ readings, is there any truth to that or can I continue preaching the virtues of sunscreen to my outdoor loving hubbie? And if I were to stop using all sunscreen, wouldn’t I look like an old leather shoe as...

Vitamin D Decreases Pain in Type 2, Study Shows
By Diane Fennell Vitamin D lessens pain in women who have Type 2 diabetes and depression, according to new research presented at a recent conference at Loyola University's Health Sciences Campus. Up to 60% of people with diabetes deal with chronic pain, according to surveys, and people with diabetes are twice as likely to have depression as those without diabetes. Two types of vitamin D are important in humans: vitamin D2, which is made by plants, and vitamin D3, which is made by human skin when it is exposed to the sun. Foods may be fortified with either type of vitamin D. To determine how vitamin D2 supplementation ...

High triglycerides: Wheat elimination or gemfibrozil?
April posted this question about high triglycerides. High triglycerides are very confusing to many people, often even ignored by many of my colleagues. Because she got such lousy advice from her doctor and because the solutions are really SO simple, I thought I’d relate her story with the advice that really works. I had blood work done last week after experiencing some edema in my feet and legs. My non-fasting triglycerides were 600 mg/dl and the doctor wants to put me on gemfibrozil and do a HbA1c to rule out diabetes. I want to try Wheat Belly first before taking the meds. Is that reasonable? He told me I need to ...

What tests are MORE important than cholesterol?
In the conventional practice of early heart disease prevention, cholesterol testing takes center stage. Rarely does it go any further, aside from questions about family history and obvious sources of modifiable risk such as smoking and sedentary lifestyle. So standard practice is to usually look at your LDL cholesterol, the value that is calculated, not measured, then–almost without fail–prescribe a statin drug. While there are indeed useful values in the standard cholesterol panel–HDL cholesterol and triglycerides–they are typically ignored or prompt no specific action. But a genuine effort at he...

Will you survive Wheat Belly?
Dietitian Kristi King reviewed Wheat Belly for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), full text here. Among her comments: ” . . . there is very little guidance as to what are appropriate substitutions during meals, therefore, one who does not review this diet with a registered dietitian could potentially set themselves up for vitamin and mineral deficiencies, such as B vitamins, calcium, and vitamin D just to name a few.” “Review this diet with a registered dietitian”? Is she serious? This is indeed consistent with the agenda that the Academy has been pursuing for many years, trying to make ...
