Setting up a biomodeling, virtual planning, and three-dimensional printing service in Uruguay
AbstractVirtual surgical planning and three-dimensional (D) printing are rapidly becoming essential for challenging and complex surgeries around the world. An Ibero-American survey reported a lack of awareness of technology benefits and scarce financial resources as the two main barriers to widespread adoption of 3-D technologies. The Pereira Rossell Hospital Center is a publicly funded maternal and pediatric academic clinical center in Uruguay, a low-resource Latin American country, that successfully created and has been running a 3-D unit for 4 years. The present work is a step-by-step review of the 3-D technology implem...

Molecular identification of Sarcocystis neurona in tissues of wild boars (Sus scrofa) in the border region between Brazil and Uruguay
AbstractSarcocystis neurona, owing to its clinical importance in domestic animals, is currently one of the most studied agents, presenting a wide range of intermediate hosts that have not yet been described, mainly in wild fauna. Thus, the aim of this study was to describe the detection and molecular detection ofS. neurona by amplification of the 18S rRNA region in the tissues of wild boars killed by boar control program in border Brazil Uruguay. A total of 79 samples of DNA from wild boar tissues from the LADOPAR/UFSM sampling bank were used, with Nested-PCR reactions being performed for amplification of the 18S rRNA regi...

Multicountry research on comprehensive abortion policy implementation in Latin America: a mixed-methods study protocol
Introduction Access to comprehensive abortion care could prevent the death of between 13 865 and 38 940 women and the associated morbidity of 5 million women worldwide. There have been some important improvements in Latin America in terms of laws and policies on abortion. However, the predominant environment is still restrictive, and many women, adolescents and girls still face multiple barriers to exercise their reproductive rights. This research will systematically assess comprehensive abortion policies in five Latin American countries (Argentina, Colombia, Honduras, Mexico and Uruguay). The aim is to identify barriers, ...

Biodiversity and brewing attitude of non-Saccharomyces strains isolated from Uruguayan vineyards and other ecosystems
Int J Food Microbiol. 2023 Dec 21;412:110529. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2023.110529. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn recent years, interest in non-Saccharomyces yeasts for the innovation and development of different and alternative beer styles has been increasing, especially for the microbrewing industry. This work studied the biodiversity of non-Saccharomyces yeasts based on isolates from grapes of different Uruguayan vineyards, craft breweries and raw materials, with the aim of selecting autochthonous non-Saccharomyces yeasts with a brewing attitude. Brewing tests were performed on synthetic wort developed for this pur...

Where I am from matters: factors influencing behavioral and emotional changes in autistic individuals during COVID-19 in Latin America
ConclusionOur findings highlight differences and predictions of behavioral challenges and psychological changes based on certain contextual factors and individual characteristics while experiencing severe life stressors such as a worldwide pandemic. This knowledge could help inform policies and decrees aimed at protecting those most vulnerable due to their increased difficulty adapting to change. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Secular trends in blood lead concentrations of school-age children in Montevideo, Uruguay from 2009 to 2019
Environ Pollut. 2023 Dec 15:123160. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2023.123160. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLead exposure continues to be a public health problem globally, yet very few countries perform systematic biomonitoring or surveillance of children's blood lead levels (BLLs). Secular trends in children's BLLs have not been well characterized outside North America and Europe. In 2009-19, we conducted a series of non-representative cross-sectional surveys in Montevideo, Uruguay, enrolling children living in areas of the city with known or suspected lead contamination. Lead was measured with atomic absorption spectrometry on ...

Pharmacogenetics of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Uruguay: adverse events related to induction phase drugs
This study aims to identify genetic variants related to drugs administered during the induction phase and analyze their contribution to adverse effects, considering individual genetic ancestry. Ten polymorphisms in five genes (ABCB1, CYP3A5, CEP72, ASNS, and GRIA1) related to prednisone, vincristine, and L-asparaginase were genotyped in 200 patients. Ancestry was determined using 45 ancestry informative markers (AIMs). The sample ancestry was 69.2% European, 20.1% Native American, and 10.7% African, but with high heterogeneity. Mucositis, Cushing syndrome, and neurotoxicity were the only adverse effects linked with genetic...
