Distribution of Inorganic Contaminants Along the Coast of Ciudad de la Costa, Uruguay
Arch Environ Contam Toxicol. 2023 Aug 31. doi: 10.1007/s00244-023-01029-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this work was to study the distribution of relevant inorganic contaminants in environmental samples from Ciudad de la Costa, the second most populated city of Uruguay. For this task aluminum (Al), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) levels were determined in sand, water, and plant material from six beaches that are located in the area. Analytical methods were successfully validated. Accuracy was ensured by using certified reference materials and spiking procedures. Average metal concentrati...

Types of Psychiatric Beds and Mental Health Services in 16 Latin American Countries, 1990-2020
CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that treatment capacity shifted from inpatient to outpatient and community care. Most countries had a bed shortage for acute psychiatric care, especially for children and adolescents and forensic patients. More comprehensive and standardized mental health service registries are needed.PMID:37644830 | DOI:10.1176/appi.ps.20220590 (Source: Psychiatric Services)

Co-circulation of Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) Genotype 3 and Moose-HEV-Like Strains in Free-Ranging-Spotted Deer (Axis axis) in Uruguay
AbstractHepatitis E caused by hepatitis E virus (HEV) is considered an emerging foodborne zoonosis in industrialized, non-endemic countries. Domestic pigs and wild boars are considered the main reservoir of HEV. However, HEV can also infect an ever-expanding host range of animals, but they exact role in transmitting the virus to other species or humans is mostly unknown. In this work, we investigated the spread of HEV in free-living and captive spotted deer (Axis axis) from Uruguay in a 2-year period (2020 –2022) and examined the role of this invasive species as a new potential reservoir of the virus. In addition, with t...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1798: Deep Sequencing to Reveal Phylo-Geographic Relationships of Juquitiba Virus in Paraguay
B. Jonsson Several hantaviruses result in zoonotic infections of significant public health concern, causing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Old and New World, respectively. Given a 35% case fatality rate, disease-causing New World hantaviruses require a greater understanding of their biology, genetic diversity, and geographical distribution. Juquitiba hantaviruses have been identified in Oligoryzomys nigripes in Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Brazil has reported the most HCPS cases associated with this virus. We used a multiplexed, amplicon-based PCR st...

Suicide in Later Life in Uruguay: A Suicide Note Analysis
This study examined the psychological processes underlying 191 suicide notes left by older adults in Uruguay, a country doubling global and regional suicide rates, with the highest prevalence among those aged 60+. Uruguay highlights in the region as a high-income country. Through content analysis with an inter-judge strategy, the notes revealed that loneliness, loss of interest, and loss of meaning for life, were prevalent. Financial hardship was not a primary reason for suicide. Social connectedness was highlighted as a factor for reducing suicide risk in older adults, particularly those with ill health and physical impai...

In Uruguay, a water crisis is upending research
MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY— A few months ago, molecular geneticist Sabina Vidal noticed something alarming in her laboratory here at the University of the Republic (Udelar), Uruguay’s largest academic research institution: The plants her team uses in its research were dying. “They wilted prematurely,” Vidal recalls, ruining experiments that had been running for years. The loss “is something that hurts our souls,” she says. Vidal isn’t the only scientist in Uruguay who is hurting. The nation’s worst drought in nearly a century has resulted in a dramatic decline in water quality that is wreaking havoc in ...

Old but still good: genetic diversity of ancient pecan genotypes from southern Brazil
In this study, AFLP and S-SAP markers were employed to characterize the genetic diversity of ancient accessions of pecan from southern Brazil. The evaluated plants were selected and preserved by the farmers and are remnants of the first introduction of seedlings from the U.S.A into southern Brazil aiming at developing research towards establishing commercial orchards. High levels of genetic diversity were estimated, suggesting that these plants have an important genetic background for the establishment of a germplasm collection with a wide genetic basis, for the development of breeding programs for this fruit crop. Cluster...
