Using a lecturer for non-science LOR?
I am planning on using a LOR from someone who taught me in a writing class to fulfill the non-science LOR requirement that some med schools have. I do have a close relationship with him and know he will have good things to say about me. However, I know some med schools state on their websites that they want a professor to write the LOR, and his title at the university is a lecturer and not professor. He does have about 20 years of teaching experience and has a masters degree. Would this... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is clinical volunteering required? What about primary care shadowing?
How important is clinical volunteering? I know it is expected, however, I didn't have the opportunity early due to covid, and had a job in the hospital by the time it was allowed, so let it slide. I have about 700 clinical hours working as a CNA, and a couple hundred volunteer hours mostly related to tutoring and teaching, which a lot of my other ecs surround. I also have 80 hours of shadowing an oncologist. Do I need to find a primary care doctor to shadow? Is there any other experience I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Research career after internship?
Hey all, I'm looking for some advice. I am on internship right now, and thought my whole PhD career that I wanted to do clinical work in neuropsychology. Now that I am finally at the stage where I am doing clinical work full time, I realize that clinical work is not the way to go for me, and it would honestly feel like torture to have to do a two year clinical postdoc. I feel like I really enjoy research work and teaching/mentorship, and would be interested in a career potentially at a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Academia options - TT, soft-money, anything else
I am on the TT at an R2 university. I have been struggling with enjoying my job because it feels that I am doing not as much as research as I would like. I still manage to be productive/get grants, but find that I only have time for research 5-10 hours per week and spend most of time during the academic year teaching, mentoring, doing service, attending meetings, etc. Have a 2/1 load which is not terrible, will be teaching less in the next few years most likely due to grant funding. I am... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Going Back to School and Job Paths
Hello Everyone, I have a few different potential opportunities and/or paths that I can take for the future and was just wondering what you all think is the better option. My ideal goal so far is to become a teaching professor or adjunct professor while doing some form of clinical work. The main question I have is which field should I go into to potentially teach down the road: psychology or social work? I looked on HigherEdJobs and I found more jobs for psychology than social work. I also... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

TMDSAS: How do I write a description of a teaching assistant without sounding corny? ESL, so I struggle with articulating my words
Here is my draft, any suggestions are appreciated : I assisted 34 pre-health students with their psychology coursework. I also provided additional support to struggling students who are non-native English speakers. In addition to helping students improve their grades, I also gained insight into the fruits of flexibility in my leadership qualities. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How important to live close to med school and hospital? Will you pay more to live on campus?
Admin, please remove if it's not allowed. I am not sure if I should post it here, but I want to get your opinion on this for one of my real estate decision since I don't know any medical students or residents. My parents passed me a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom property right adjacent to a big teaching hospital with a medical school onsite. It basically shares a small street with the hospital. Cross the street is one of the employee parking lot and the AmCare building (I did my rotation there). The... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

"Science Professor" LOR
Hello! Posted a separate thread because I had a separate question regarding LOR's. What's considered a science professor? One of my science courses in the summer was taught by someone who has a masters but not a PhD, and they do not teach during the regular school year. Would this still count as a science professor? They also were an EC advisor for me, so I'm not sure how to categorize them. If I could use them as a science professor, that would be great, though, as we had a strong relationship. Worst Doctor Experiences as a Patient/Family of Patient
Teaching hospital. Parent admitted for major cardiac surgery. Surgery went over allotted time by 4-5 hours. Attending surgeon explained vaguely in waiting room something about a mistake; they had to scrub into the operation and take over for residents. Compounded by 2 days later at heavily sedated/unconscious parent's bedside during visiting hours. Medschool's attending nephrologist along with one of their fellows or resident come by the foot of bed. Doc sees patient's family member and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Clinical Lab Director
Hello, How did you guys learn how to become a lab director. I’d like to learn how to manage a lab (answer questions from docs etc, prepare lab for inspection) for extra income but my residency didn’t teach me sh%t about managing a lab. I’m in practice now but have no role in lab directorship yet. Basically didn’t learn much in the way of CP from residency. No hands on learning. Just studied compendium and Osler. Did you guys just learn on the job (if you were lucky enough to have a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Next demand in pharmacy? Other than retail :)
Hello all, On your expert opinion, what do you predict to be a potential area of demand in the pharmacy field in the foreseeable future? I am a pharmacist with the following experience: 2-year teaching/research fellowship in the academic setting, 1 year pharmacy manager in a rural retail setting, 1 year float retail pharmacist. Seeking a career transition potentially within the field and maybe with some additional training, but not sure at all where pharmacists/pharmacist skills have a...
