How many residency apps should I really do?
I am not finding a great answer as to how many residency programs I should apply to. Quite frankly, I could only find 34 with some of those even being a stretch. I am applying IM only, in Chicago area and South Florida area. Have a long list of work, extracurriculars, teaching/leadership roles but no research experience.
Step 1: 221
Step 2: 250
I can't seem to find a calculator or anything like that. My residency advisor/random person at my school who has never met me before and sat with...

Residents learning in your department
Hi! I am 2nd year pathology resident from Spain.
I am interested in finding out what the teaching organization of residents in your pathology department is like, especially the residents who have just joined.
In my department, the teaching organization is practically non-existent. We legally have a chief of residents, but he does absolutely nothing.
I am interested above all in the organization of the R1 and, especially, how grossing for the R1 is organized in your department.
In my...

Should I Include This EC?
In early 2020, I started volunteering Clinical Volunteering in the hospital. Then volunteering was stopped almost right away because of COVID-19. I basically only volunteered for 3-5 hours TOTAL. Later that year, I started a Non-Clinical Volunteering myself (mostly online in the beginning) to teach a subject I know a lot about to some youth in my community.
I never started the Clinical Volunteering again. Should I even include it on my application? I feel like it's embarrassing to have so...

At what point is it mistreatment rather than teaching at an externship?
I am just wondering as I am externing at these places, at what point should I feel like a program is just abusing externs rather than teaching them and stay away from them? I think we are all being brainwashed at school to accept any order as an authority, but I think some of the things are coming out as unfair in my opinion. For instance, I was asked to cover a “clinic” by a senior at one of the programs when I just shadow there because I can’t see patients independently. I was actually...

Nova Southeastern University OTD
To anyone filling out applications and deciding on schools to apply to on OTCAS:
I would highly suggest you ask many questions when applying and choosing schools. I attended Nova Southeastern University this summer and left because everything they told me when I accepted my admission was a lie and a show. They were unsupportive, unorganized, and I felt the professors did not think I had any potential. One of them even told me to possibly change my career to possibly teaching because of my...

How did you feel after leaving academia for private practice?
I currently am junior faculty at a major academic institution, making above the AAMC average for my rank (although not nearly as much as I could in PP). I do a mix of inpatient/outpatient, small amount of neuromodulation, and teaching. Compared to my colleagues, I probably have a better work/life balance in terms of the mix of things that I do. That being said, I still cover several weeks and do call throughout the year. Lately, the acuity has started to be quite draining and now a few years...

Stop using students for free labor
On my extrenships I’ve learned so much. I’m thankful, one of the most important things I’ve learned is how to treat fellow student when I have the privilege of teaching.
Rules to live by:
1) don’t use us as scribes to chart all day everyday
2) don’t pimp us for your amusement
3) don’t use us as retraction monkeys
4) don’t use us to room patient
5) don’t use us to remove dressings
6) don’t use us as free nail nippers
After 2 weeks of all of the above; attending need to have confidence that...
