Tuberculosis vaccine safe for teens with Schistosoma parasite
(PLOS) Of the millions of people at risk for contracting tuberculosis each year, many are already infected with helminths, parasitic worms including Schistosoma flatworms. In some cases, parasite infections can impair the ability of an immunization to work. But adolescents infected with Schistosoma mansoni respond as well as uninfected teens do to a candidate booster tuberculosis vaccine, according to a new study in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. When Men and Women Differ
By Drs. David Niesel and Norbert Herzog Besides the obvious physical differences, science is beginning to tease out some significant biological differences between men and women that have implications for women's health. A call to action was the measles vaccine that the World Health Organization suddenly had to withdraw after the deaths of infant girls increased but not boys. The cause remains unclear, but it served as a wakeup call to science to pay attention to gender differences when evaluating or testing drugs or vaccines. Fifteen years ago, it was discovered that women infected with HIV, are usually infected by m...

Cleverly designed tuberculosis vaccine shows promise in mice
A clever new tuberculosis vaccine has shown promise in trials in mice. If it succeeds, it will be the first new TB vaccine in a century. With the rise of multidrug resistant tuberculosis, the difficulty of curing the disease, and the large annual death toll, a successful vaccine could be a huge benefit to public health -- especially in low- and middle income countries. How the tuberculosis vaccine may protect against other diseases
(Cell Press) The tuberculosis vaccine is well known to help protect against other infectious diseases, as well as cancer, but the exact mechanisms have not been clear. A study publishedin Cell Reports now shows that the broad-spectrum effects of the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine could be mediated by metabolic and epigenetic changes in white blood cells through a process called trained immunity. This discovery could pave the way for strategies that boost the effectiveness of vaccines. (Source: EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases)

Holding My Breath: Life After Being Diagnosed With TB
In August, I was diagnosed with tuberculosis, an infection that is responsible for more deaths around the world than any other. There was a catch though--it is a latent infection, meaning that it is not spreading nor is it contagious. But if it becomes active, it could be transmitted to my children, my husband and even someone sitting next to me on a plane. Tuberculosis, or TB, is a disease that should be long gone; the bacteria has been found in Egyptian mummies. And yet, TB kills more people today than any other infectious disease in the world: 1.8 million people in 2015, according to an announcement last week by the Wo...

Tuberculosis bacteria find their ecological niche
(German Center for Infection Research) An international team of researchers have isolated and analyzed genetically tuberculosis bacteria from several thousand patients from over a hundred countries. This analysis demonstrates that the tuberculosis bacteria vary in their ecological niche. Whereas the so-called generalists occur all around the world, the specialists are only found in certain geographical regions. This finding, published in the renowned journal Nature Genetics, could further complicate the development of novel tuberculosis vaccines. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)
