Performance and impact of contact tracing in the Sudan Virus Outbreak in Uganda, September 2022 –January 2023
Sudan Virus Disease (SVD) is a severe viral haemorrhagic fever caused by the Sudan Virus (SUDV). Bats are assumed to be the virus reservoir, and after zoonotic introduction into primates or humans (either through presumed bat-human or bat-primate contact), the virus can pass through direct contact or contact with infected body fluids or contaminated fomites [1]. Zoonotic transmission is rare; in a given outbreak once the virus passes into the human population, most or all subsequent cases result from human-to-human transmission [2]. Exploring genetic diversity and variation of Ovar-DRB1 gene in Sudan Desert Sheep using targeted next-generation sequencing
The Ovar-DRB1 gene, a crucial element of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) Class II region, initiates adaptive immunity by presenting antigens to T-cells. Genetic diversity in sheep, particularly in MHC ... (Source: BMC Genomics)

Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 210: Selection and Validation of Reference Genes in Sudan Grass (Sorghum sudanense (Piper) Stapf) under Various Abiotic Stresses by qRT-PCR
nquan Zhang Quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) can screen applicable reference genes of species, and reference genes can be used to reduce experimental errors. Sudan grass (Sorghum sudanense (Piper) Stapf) is a high-yield, abiotic-tolerant annual high-quality forage with a wide range of uses. However, no studies have reported reference genes suitable for Sudan grass. Therefore, we found eight candidate reference genes, including UBQ10, HIS3, UBQ9, Isoform0012931, PP2A, ACP2, eIF4α, and Actin, under salt stress (NaCl), drought stress (DR), acid aluminum stress (AlCl3), and methyl jasmonate tr...

Simplified treatment protocols improve recovery of children with severe acute malnutrition in South Sudan: results from a mixed methods study
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that few children were excluded when weight-for-height criteria were suspended. LoS was shortest when only MUAC was used for entry/exit but dosing and visit frequency were unchanged. Significantly shorter LoS with simplified dosing and visit frequency vs. under the standard protocol indicate that protocol adaptations may lead to shorter recovery and program enrollment times. Findings also suggest that good recovery is achievable with reduced visit frequency and simplified dosing.PMID:38308364 | PMC:PMC10835937 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-024-00518-2 (Source: Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition)

Viable justice: survivors of sexual and gender-based violence and/or torture amongst South Sudanese refugees living in settlements in Northern Uganda
This study argues that what the survivors who participated in this research wanted was “viable justice”. The research was funded by the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust.Using a survivor-focussed justice lens combined with a trauma-informed approach, narrative interviews were held with 41 women and 20 men refugee survivors living in refugee settlements in Northern Uganda. The researchers also conducted semi-structured interviews with 37 key informants including refugee welfare councils, the UN, civil society, non-government and government organisations. Thematic analysis of the data resulted in the following theme...

Limitations of antifungal prophylaxis in preventing invasive < em > Candida < /em > surgical site infections after liver transplant surgery
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2024 Feb 1:e0127923. doi: 10.1128/aac.01279-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInvasive primary Candida surgical site infections (IP-SSIs) are a common complication of liver transplantation, and targeted antifungal prophylaxis is an efficient strategy to limit their occurrence. We performed a retrospective single-center cohort study among adult single liver transplant recipients at Duke University Hospital in the period between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2020. The study aimed to determine the rate of Candida IP-SSI according to the peri-transplant antifungal prophylaxis received. Of 470 adul...

Comparative Analysis of VMAT and IMRT Techniques: Evaluation of Dose Constraints and Bone Marrow Sparing in Cervical Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemoradiotherapy
CONCLUSION: Our study adds to the growing evidence that VMAT might be the preferred technique for patients with carcinoma of the cervix undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy, as it provides comparable target coverage and better sparing of bone marrow compared to IMRT.PMID:38285777 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2024.25.1.139 (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention)
