Kamara Jonathan S. Towner Aiah Lebbie Sosuga virus (SOSV), a rare human pathogenic paramyxovirus, was first discovered in 2012 when a person became ill after working in South Sudan and Uganda. During an ecological investigation, several species of bats were sampled and tested for SOSV RNA and only one species, the Egyptian rousette bat (ERBs; Rousettus aegyptiacus), tested positive. Since that time, multipl...

Delays in presentation, diagnosis, and treatment in Sudanese women with breast cancer: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Most Sudanese women with breast cancer experience significant patient delays, often presenting at advanced stages. Factors like being single, older, and living in rural areas contribute to these delays. Increasing breast cancer education, improving healthcare access and addressing sociodemographic barriers can potentially expedite diagnosis and improve outcomes.PMID:38642908 | DOI:10.1093/oncolo/oyae066 (Source: The Oncologist)

Onchocerciasis-Associated Epilepsy: charting a path forward
The association between onchocerciasis and epilepsy was initially suggested by Casis-Sacre in Chiapas and Oaxaca in Mexico in 1938 [1]. In 1942, Balanzario Rosas, a collaborator of Casis-Sacre, described the “onchocerciasis epileptic syndrome” [2], characterised by epilepsy onset between 9 and 18 years of age, growth failure, neurodevelopmental impairment, a “simian face”, and physical deformities [2]. Later, the association between onchocerciasis and epilepsy was also observed in Bahr El Ghazal , South Sudan [3]. (Source: Seizure: European Journal of Epilepsy)

Description of female dendritobilharzia pulverulenta (braun, 1901) skrjabin, 1924 from two new avian hosts in namibia with phylogenetic analyses and comments on several taxonomically uncertain avian schistosome sequences
J Parasitol. 2024 Apr 1;110(2):170-178. doi: 10.1645/23-44.ABSTRACTDuring a 2021 parasitological survey of birds in the Nyae Nyae-Khaudum Dispersal Area (Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, Namibia), we collected 9 specimens of Dendritobilharzia pulverulenta (Braun, 1901) Skrjabin, 1924 infecting the blood (heart lumen) of a white-backed duck, Thalassornis leuconotus (Eyton, 1838) (Anseriformes: Anatidae), and a fulvous whistling duck, Dendrocygna bicolor (Vieillot, 1816) (Anatidae). These flukes were fixed for morphology and preserved for DNA extraction. We assigned our specimens to DendritobilharziaSkrjabin ...

Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) drug efficacy study landscape: A systematic scoping review of clinical trials and observational studies to assess the feasibility of establishing an individual participant-level data (IPD) platform
ConclusionsOur review identified studies with very limited sample size for the three major drugs (miltefosine, L-AmB, and pentavalent antimony), while the number of patients combined across studies suggest that the IPD platform would be valuable. With the support of relevant stakeholders, the global PKDL community and sufficient financing, a PKDL IPD platform can be realised. This will allow for exploration of different aspects of treatment safety and efficacy, which can potentially guide future healthcare decisions and clinical practices. et Elisha Riggs Listening to What Matters is an exploratory descriptive qualitative study that aimed to (1) understand how women of refugee background in Melbourne, Australia experienced access to health information and maternity and/or early parenting care during the COVID-19 pandemic and (2) whether pandemic health directives had an impact on structural inequities for women of refugee background who received maternity and/or early parenting care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 41 participants including 17 women of refugee background, who identified as belonging to the Ka...

Ferroptosis contributes to airway epithelial E-cadherin disruption in a mixed granulocytic asthma mouse model
This study was aimed to evaluate the role of ferroptosis and to investigate whether ferroptosis mediates E-cadherin disruption in mixed granulocyte asthma (MGA). Two murine models of MGA were established using toluene diisocyanate (TDI) or ovalbumin with Complete Freund's Adjuvant (OVA/CFA). Specific antagonists of ferroptosis, including Liproxstatin-1 (Lip-1) and Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) were given to the mice. The allergen-exposed mice displayed markedly shrunk mitochondria in the airway epithelia, with decreased volume and denser staining accompanied by down-regulated GPX4 as well as up-regulated FTH1 and malondialdehyde, ...
