A Healed Intertrochanteric Femur Fracture, Shoulder, and Rib Fractures in an Ancient Nubian Female: An Osteoarchaeological Perspective
This report is a case of a healed proximal intertrochanteric femur fracture nonunion in an ancient Nubian adult female, approximately 58 years old at the time of death, from the Tombos archaeological site in present day northern Sudan. Tombos was founded as an Egyptian colonial town during the New Kingdom Period (14001070 BC). The individual was radiocarbon dated to 1114-910 BC and also exhibited healed fractures of the left proximal humerus and ribs. There was shortening and mild atrophy of the right femur compared to the left; radiographs demonstrated a varus deformity of the proximal femur with associated retroversion. ...

Inpatient outcomes of inflammatory bowel disease in hospitalized patients with COVID-19: analysis of a nationally representative sample
CONCLUSION: Our national study on COVID-19 hospitalizations indicates that patients with IBD have comparable rates of gastrointestinal bleeding, pulmonary embolism, and mortality as those without IBD. However, patients with UC hospitalized with COVID-19 have a higher risk of deep vein thrombosis than COVID-19 patients hospitalized without UC. Further research is needed to better understand the relationship between COVID-19 and IBD.PMID:38343460 | PMC:PMC10857601 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2303402 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

Prevalence and Risk Factors of New-onset Diabetes after Transplant in East Africans
Saudi J Kidney Dis Transpl. 2023 Jul 1;34(4):331-336. doi: 10.4103/1319-2442.395449. Epub 2024 Feb 12.ABSTRACTVery little is known about the prevalence of new-onset diabetes after transplant (NODAT) in sub-Saharan and Eastern Africans. Most of the data are related to African Americans and to North and South Africans. The aims of this study were to examine the prevalence of NODAT in Sudanese renal transplant recipients, compare it with the published literature, and identify the risk factors for developing NODAT. In total, 150 patients who received a living-related kidney transplant between January 2015 and January 2016 were...

International study of childhood leukemia in residences near electrical transformer rooms
DISCUSSION: Overall, evidence for an elevated risk was weak. However, small numbers and wide confidence intervals preclude strong conclusions and a risk of the magnitude observed in power line studies cannot be excluded.PMID:38346482 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2024.118459 (Source: Environmental Research)

Solution-Phase Late-Stage Chemoselective Photocatalytic Removal of Sulfonyl and Phenacyl Groups in Peptides
Chemistry. 2024 Feb 12:e202400033. doi: 10.1002/chem.202400033. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerein, BPC catalyzed visible-light-triggered target-specific late-stage solution phase desulfonylation from tryptophan in oligopeptides is portrayed by overcoming the isolation issue up to octamers. This robust and mild method is highly predictable and chemoselective, tolerating myriad of functional groups in aza-heteroaromatics and peptides. Interestingly, reductive desulfonylation is also amenable to biologically significant reactive histidine and tyrosine side chains, signifying the versatility of the strategy. Additional effi...
